The greatest love in Green Lantern has ever known is returning, but is it going to be a fairy tale reunion? Ever since Hal Jordan left the Green Lantern Corps, he's wanted nothing more than to pick up where he left off with his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Carol Ferris.

Unfortunately, while Green Lantern was looking to the past, Carol moved on with her life. But things in Jordan's life are changing rapidly help Green Lantern overcome this latest trial or is their partnership doomed to fail?

Green Lantern and Star Sapphire's Intense Love Affair

Green Lantern first met Carol when they were both kids on the day Hal witnessed his father, Martin Jordan, die in a plane crash while testing an aircraft for Ferris. Hal would grow up to be a pilot like his father and after serving a stint in the Air Force, he was hired at Ferris Air, which wound up being taken over by Carol after her father stepped down For years, Jordan worked at Ferris Air and bonding with Carol while hiding his true identity as Green Lantern.

Green Lantern's past can be seen in Green Lantern: Secret Origin!

It wasn’t long until Carol got her own cosmic upgrade. She was selected by the Zamarons to be a Star Sapphire, a champion powered by the Violet Light of Love. However, in her earliest days as Star Sapphire, Carol had less control over herself, leading to many battles between her and Green Lantern. After a brief retirement, Carol became a Star Sapphire again but had much greater control over her powers. She worked alongside Hal and several other light-wielders to defeat the Black Lantern Corps during Blackest Night.

After a few years of refining and even leading the new and improved Star Sapphires, Carol retired again and went back to Earth. Later, Hal came back to Earth as well after he resigned from the Corps after a traumatic incident ended with the death of his friend, Kilowog. Hal tried to rekindle things with Carol, but she had moved on and was dating someone new. While Hal wanted to try and patch things up with Carol, the former Green Lantern became distracted with odd occurrences in the Emotional Spectrum.

Having uncovered the truth behind the United Planets, Hal and the rest of the 2814 lanterns desperately try to escape the hands of the United Planets’ Lanterns, Ring Hunters, and the terrifying Unseen! Only a former ally gives Hal a chance of survival, but will they be too late to save him from certain doom?! Plus, Guy Gardner’s bogus Lobo adventure gets somehow even crazier. Don’t ask us how; we just work here.

Green Lantern discovered from his old ally Razer that someone was systematically destroying the Central Power Batteries for the various Corps in the Emotional Spectrum. The Yellow, Blue, Red, and Orange Batteries have all been destroyed. Unbeknownst to Hal, these attacks were secretly ordered by the United Planets, the Green Lantern Corps’ new leaders. Despite Hal wanting to stay and try to rekindle his relationship with Carol, the Green Lantern headed out to figure out a way of bringing order back to the Emotional Spectrum.

Carol is wearing an upgraded version of her Star Sapphire costume

As it turns out, Green Lantern won’t be alone in this journey. DC Comics has revealed what it has planned for later in the year with its June solicitations. In Green Lantern #12 by Jeremy Adams, Xermanico, and Kevin Maguire, Hal’s going to be facing several threats such as the United Planets, the Ring Hunters, and the terrifying Unseen. But a “former ally” will be there to give Green Lantern a chance of survival and by the looks of the issue’s cover, that ally is Star Sapphire.

Xermanico’s cover for Green Lantern #12 doesn’t hold back and shows Green Lantern and Star Sapphire in a romantic tableau as they go in for a kiss out in space. Carol is wearing an upgraded version of her Star Sapphire costume that balances out the copious amounts of pink with black. It’s hard to say if this is Carol acting under her own will or if the Violet Light is taking control again. But Carol is back as Star Sapphire right when the Emotional Spectrum needs her.

Can Star Sapphire Help Green Lantern Fix the Emotional Spectrum?

Comic book art: Star Sapphire glows pink as she uses her ring.

It’s no surprise that Star Sapphire is coming now. With the Yellow, Blue, Orange, and Red Central Power Batteries destroyed, there’s only two other Emotional Spectrum factions left (not counting other Corps like Black, White, or Ultraviolet). Just as Hal is one of the greatest wielders of the Emerald Light, no one knows how to operate the Violet Light like Carol. Sure, she’s spent time under its thrall, but she eventually found ways to control it and became the best Star Sapphire to ever bear the title.

Green Lantern's going to need more firepower by his side to take down the United Planets

While it’s good to see Green Lantern and Star Sapphire potentially on good and reigniting their romance again, there are much more pressing concerns at the moment. The United Planets to quash every other faction in the Emotional Spectrum so that the Green Lantern Corps will have a monopoly on the various lights. While Carol is regaining her connection to the Violet light, she might not have it for long if the United Planets decide to attack the Star Sapphire Central Power Battery.

Not only does Green Lantern need to protect the Indigo and Violet lights, but he also needs to overthrow the United Planets’ leadership. While several other heroes such as Jo Mullein and Kyle Rayner are working behind the scenes to re-establish order, Green Lantern's going to need more firepower by his side to take down the United Planets and its leader, Lord Premier Thaaros. Star Sapphire might not possess the mightiest light in the Emotional Spectrum, but her power could be enough to help Green Lantern save the day.

Green Lantern and Star Sapphire are the Emotional Spectrum's Last Hope

Green Lantern Emotional Spectrum Corps DC Comics

It’s great to see Green Lantern and Star Sapphire again. But before these two can truly get their relationship back on track, they’re going to have to work together to save the Emotional Spectrum from being completely destroyed by the United Planets. Hopefully, Hal and Carol can work past all the drama they’ve dealt with before and be the team that can save the Green Lantern Corps from itself. Otherwise, Green Lantern and Star Sapphire’s reunion might be more short-lived than fans were hoping for.
