Meredith leaving Seattle potentially upsets the balance of what has always been the sisters’ trio composed of her, Amelia, and Maggie; however, Grey’s Anatomy season 19 shouldn’t lose sight of the sisterly bond also existing between Amelia and Maggie. After Grey’s Anatomy season 10’s finale brought both Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) permanently to Seattle and Maggie’s Ellis secret was revealed, the two and Meredith’s sisterhood became a staple of the medical drama’s last nine seasons. Derek’s death even prompted the three to move in together to help Meredith with her children after their return from their furtive move across the country.

The three’s sisterhood grew to involve Amelia and Maggie’s families, especially in Grey’s Anatomy season 17’s pandemic storyline, which saw almost everyone eventually stay at Ellis’ place. While Grey’s Anatomy season 19, episode 6’s destruction of Ellis’ house will likely affect the sisters’ balance, Meredith’s departure for Boston will do too, risking endangering one of Grey’s Anatomy’s long-standing peculiarities, as past sisterly bonds between Meredith and Cristina, or Meredith and Lexie, all made the show stand out.

Amelia & Maggie Came Together For Meredith’s Kids

While Grey’s Anatomy season 11 centered more on Meredith and Maggie grappling with the notion of both being Ellis’ daughters and what that meant for the bond they could have established, Grey’s Anatomy season 12 saw Maggie acclimatizing to her life at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Being accepted by Meredith and offering her after Derek’s death eventually led Maggie to be often close to Amelia, who not only suffered an enormous loss with Derek’s death too but was also seen as a sister by Meredith. Despite Meredith being their sisterhood’s glue, living together to her and her kids led Maggie and Amelia also to develop a sisterly bond.

Grey’s Anatomy season 12 saw Meredith, Amelia, and Maggie all getting used to living together and sharing their space, from carpooling to the hospital to throwing dinner parties with their coworkers at Ellis’ house. While at first, Grey’s Anatomy season 12 favored the development of their bond as a group, it eventually focused on Amelia and Maggie’s relationship, as Grey’s Anatomy season 12, episode 7 showed Maggie and Amelia’s conversation about racism and white privilege. Additionally, Amelia and Owen’s Grey’s Anatomy season 12 wedding cemented their bond, not only because of Meredith’s beautiful speech to an upset Amelia but also because they both accompanied Amelia in running away from it.

Maggie Spun Out With The Reveal Of Owen & Teddy’s Baby

Although Maggie and Amelia proved their ability and willingness to Meredith, Grey’s Anatomy season 15 also showed how they were willing to do the same for each other. The reason behind Teddy’s surprise arrival in Seattle stayed long hidden from many, but Maggie was, unfortunately, one of the first to know it, as she ended up treating Teddy for her suspected blood clot. Maggie’s upfront honesty was always one of her core features, and keeping from Amelia that Owen got Teddy pregnant almost broke her in Grey’s Anatomy season 15’s earliest episodes.

Despite going through some challenging stuff of her own at the time, knowing what would eventually rekindle Owen and Teddy’s relationship put Maggie in a terrible position. Not only did Maggie break doctor/patient confidentiality by telling Meredith about Teddy’s secret, but she also often tried to understand Amelia’s perspective on going against oaths to prevent shocking news from blindsiding someone. Maggie’s problem with the secret was her refusal to be complicit in covering up something that would have hurt many at the core, but that was particularly shocking to her because the person who would have impacted the most was Amelia, who became dear to her.

Amelia ed Maggie When Jackson Left

Grey’s Anatomy seasons 15 and 16 showed that Maggie’s consideration of Amelia as a sister wasn’t unilateral. Despite Maggie trying to repeatedly set up Amelia with anybody that wasn’t Owen in Grey’s Anatomy season 15, episode 3, Amelia didn’t fault her once she realized Maggie didn’t know about Jackson leaving. Grey’s Anatomy season 15 made it clear that Maggie’s knowledge of Teddy’s secret was behind her flawed attempts, but even without knowing that, Amelia forgave her in a heartbeat once she learned of Jackson’s baffling behavior, trying to Maggie in any way she could.

When Maggie and Jackson’s relationship was finally over in Grey’s Anatomy season 16, episode 2, it wasn’t Meredith who accompanied Maggie to Jackson’s penthouse to get back her stuff, but Amelia. Despite Meredith always offering both Maggie and Amelia and help, messier aspects of their lives often made the two look for in each other rather than involving Meredith. Maggie and Amelia’s heart-to-hearts during Maggie’s Jackson ordeal even involved Amelia listening to Maggie’s deepest fears and reassuring her there was nothing wrong with her, cementing their sisterhood as one of the closest and best in Grey’s Anatomy.

Maggie Was There For Amelia When She Was Pregnant

Grey’s Anatomy season 17’s Link and Amelia crisis eventually led to their breakup, but Grey’s Anatomy season 16 had them going strong, which was why the news of her pregnancy came as a shock to Amelia. Threatening to upset the balance Amelia and Link had carefully cultivated, having to decide how to share the news with Link bothered Amelia, who ended up going to Maggie for . Maggie being the first person to learn about Amelia’s pregnancy from Amelia mirrored her problems with Teddy’s secret from Grey’s Anatomy season 15. However, Maggie also offered her unwavering throughout Amelia’s ponderings, giving her advice and someone to rely on.

Maggie became Amelia’s confidante about her pregnancy, as Grey’s Anatomy season 16, episode 3 showed when Maggie became the first person to know Amelia wanted to keep her baby, pointing to Maggie being the sister that would have been privy to Amelia’s deepest wishes. Maggie and Winston’s problems storyline took much space in Grey’s Anatomy season 19, but it still hasn’t led to Maggie opening up to her sisters about them. Considering Meredith’s move to Boston, Maggie leaning on Amelia for would be the perfect storyline to complement Maggie and Winston’s issues and the perfect opportunity for Grey’s Anatomy to make sure it doesn’t forget Maggie and Amelia’s sisterhood.
