Meredith & Arizona's Grey's Anatomy Exits Explained

Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey in Grey's Anatomy Season 1

Having been on the show so long, Arizona was part of many of its biggest storylines, especially when it came to her relationship with Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez), with whom she got married and then divorced after losing her leg in an airplane accident. Jessica Capshaw's Grey's Anatomy exit came about when she and Sarah Drew were fired due to creative differences. However, onscreen, Arizona decided to move to New York so her daughter Sofia could be close to both her parents.

Meredith’s return comes after a much shorter period, but it is no less important. Meredith departed the show in season 19, episode 7, when she moved across the country so her gifted daughter could go to the right school. Pompeo stayed on as an executive producer and the show's narrator, but her departure will allow her to pursue other projects aside from Grey's after nearly two decades of playing almost no other roles other than the iconic Meredith Grey.
