Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2.The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2 makes Grogu's Mandalorian-Jedi journey more confusing through a scene with Bo-Katan Kryze. Much of the second episode of The Mandalorian season 3 - aptly titled "Chapter 18: The Mines of Mandalore" - centers on Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin exploring the titular mines with Grogu. However, after Din is captured by one of the dark creatures dwelling in the catacombs beneath Mandalore's surface, Grogu enlists the aid of Katee Sackhoff's Bo-Katan.
This causes the second act of The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2 to center on Grogu and Bo-Katan teaming up to find Din. Throughout this sequence, Bo-Katan shares many interesting insights into her past and present by talking to Grogu about various Star Wars elements. One of these in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2 involves the history between the Jedi and Mandalorians, which makes Grogu's split loyalties in the Mandoverse thus far more confusing.
Bo-Katan Still Considers Grogu A Jedi, Not A Mandalorian
The confusion comes from Bo-Katan's consideration of Grogu as a Jedi. Despite Din constantly referring to Mandalorians as "our people" when talking to Grogu, Bo-Katan's mention of the Jedi shows that she still assumes Grogu is one. At one point in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2, Bo-Katan talks to Grogu about her past with Jedi: "I knew quite a few Jedi, you know... there was a time we actually got along quite well; fought side-by-side." Bo-Katan then asks Grogu how strong he is with the Force before battling a group of Alamites in an attempted ambush.
This exchange clearly shows that Bo-Katan still views Grogu as a Jedi. Granted, the last time Bo-Katan saw Grogu before The Mandalorian season 3, he was being whisked away to train with Luke Skywalker, and she may not know Grogu chose to return to Din. Regardless, it is clear from Bo-Katan's attempt to find common ground with Grogu through her past friendships with Jedi that she still considers him one, or at least subliminally links Grogu to the Jedi in her mind.
Will Grogu Ever Officially Become A Mandalorian?
Bo-Katan's view of Grogu and Din's insistence that he is a Mandalorian after choosing to return to him makes Grogu's choice in The Book of Boba Fett slightly more confusing. However, the question of whether Grogu will ever become an official Mandalorian could ease confusion, and will almost undoubtedly be addressed in The Mandalorian season 3, as hinted at by some shots in the marketing. The opening sequence of The Mandalorian season 3, episode 1 saw the Armorer emerging from a cave surrounded by other Mandalorians and inducting a young child into the Children of the Watch, officially making him one of their people.
A shot that can be seen in the official trailer for The Mandalorian season 3 shows Din emerging from an almost identical cave entrance surrounded by other Mandalorians. This could hint that, at some point in The Mandalorian season 3, Grogu will undergo this same induction process, led by Din himself. If this is the case, Grogu's official status as a Mandalorian would then solidify his commitment to the Creed.
This is not to say that he turns his back entirely on the Jedi, however. As Star Wars has established the concept of Mandalorian Jedi in the past, Grogu could certainly fill that role going forward in the Mandalorian-centric part of Star Wars’ overarching Disney+ story. That being said, it will be interesting to see how The Mandalorian season 3 develops Grogu's character and his conflicting loyalties of the past.
