Following speculation of a Groot solo movie, in December 2020 Marvel Studios announced that the character would get his own spinoff show, I Am Groot, which will be available on Disney+ in August 2022. I Am Groot will consist of five animated shorts, making a change from the typical Marvel release. Vin Diesel will return as the voice of Groot in the series which promises to be unique compared to other MCU offerings.

The main way that I Am Groot will differentiate itself from other MCU productions is that viewers will not need to do any homework before watching. After the announcement that the series will land on Disney+ in Summer 2022, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to Twitter to clarify that the animated shorts will not necessarily be part of the Guardians saga, suggesting that I Am Groot is unlikely to have lots of links to other parts of the MCU canon. The news is a welcome change because rather than having to catch up on what has happened before the series, viewers will be able to enjoy I Am Groot on a more casual level.

In its infancy, the MCU was manageable to keep up with because only one or two movies were released each year. But the franchise has massively grown in the last decade and viewers need a good grasp on what has happened previously to understand characters' allegiances and powers in later movies. The complicated interconnectedness of the MCU has been one of its biggest criticisms because of the commitment required to follow all of its storylines.

To understand Wanda Maximoff's motives and all of the other WandaVision. That's over 24 hours of viewing just to be able to fully appreciate the details of one movie. Doctor Strange 2 is not the exception either as all new MCU content now requires a high level of baseline knowledge of past events.

By being a standalone series that is not concerned with past MCU canon, I Am Groot viewers won't need to worry about rewatching the Guardians of the Galaxy or The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. The easy-going nature of I Am Groot will be a refreshing change as viewers can relax and enjoy the series without worrying that they are missing out on key details from past MCU productions.
