Some the original GTA 6 trailer, which caused an explosive reaction upon its debut in 2023. Since then, though, it's been radio silence from Rockstar, as the fall 2025 release window creeps ever closer.

A post on X (formerly Twitter) by the unofficial GTA Online DLC, which is due out on December 10. Finally, the post notes that Rockstar has ramped up its social media posting in recent days, going from sporadic Tweets every few days in late November to three posts in one day today.

It's a compelling theory, but barring an actual trailer, there's no way to whether it's actually true. Sure, there's a lot going on in Rockstar's corner at the moment, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's gearing up for a trailer launch - or does it?

It's The Perfect Time For A GTA 6 Trailer

But That Doesn't Mean We'll Get One

There's some logic to this theory. Anyone with an eye on video game marketing knows that developers and publishers love taking advantage of organic hype. The renewed social media discourse around the first GTA 6 trailer was basically inevitable. A Rockstar dev can hardly sneeze without every GTA 6 release date conspiracy theorist analyzing its sound, texture, and consistency, insisting that it must mean something.

Grand Theft Auto 5 may remain as popular as ever even after the release of GTA 6 in 2025, as players have a decade of time and money invested.

Of course social media would be in a tizzy over the one-year anniversary this week, which would make it the perfect time to drop an announcement. Even the slightest tidbit of news would practically promote itself, generating a whole lot of attention for Rockstar with relaltively little effort. The end-of-year timing is also telling, as many games put out major announcements around this time to coincide with things like The Game Awards. A recent rumor, posted to Reddit by unia_, claims that Rockstar also recently updated the YouTube playlist where the first trailer lives.

Another thing marketers love is cross-promotion. If a sequel's coming out next month, they'll often put the previous game on heavy discount (or even free on PlayStation Plus) to drum up interest, and bring would-be fans up to speed. Another frequent tactic is to put out a big update or DLC for the previous game right before making a major announcement. With Agents of Sabotage coming out for GTA Online next week, Rockstar could have that kind of tactic in mind.

And yes, Rockstar has been posting on social media quite a bit more than usual, but that's not the definitive piece of evidence that most GTA fans want it to be. Every company's been ramping up their social media presence in recent days: it's the holiday season, and they all have something to promote. All of Rockstar's recent posts have been about ongoing and events in GTA Online, with one snuck in about an holiday sale. There's nothing there that immediately suggests a GTA 6 trailer is coming soon.

Again, there's been no official confirmation (or much of anything) from Rockstar regarding this theory. It's unlikely that Rockstar would announce and drop a GTA 6 trailer on the same day; , last year, they gave us four whole days of lead time. The following trailer will probably be announced ahead of time in a similar fashion.

Our Take: There's (Probably) Not Going To Be A GTA 6 Trailer Today

Look, I get it - it's been an impossibly long wait for GTA 6, and we're all desperate for an update. There's a small part of me that hopes that the rumors are true, and that we'll get a full-fledged trailer with a narrower release window some time this week, if not today. But is this really how far we've fallen? Are we actually counting down the days, marking our calendars for the anniversaries of trailers now, as if they're significant in any way?

I'm excited for GTA 6 too, but at this point, I know it's still almost a year away (barring any delays). As a result, it's about the furthest thing from my mind right now. I have a huge backlog of indie games that I still need to play. I'm still working my way through the Dragon Quest 3 remake. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle comes out next week on Game . That's why I'm begging GTA fans: please play another game.

GTA 6's Story Could Be Setting Up Rockstar's Most Emotional Moment Yet

Betrayal is such a major theme throughout Rockstar Studio's games, Grand Theft Auto 6's treachery storyline has an opportunity to top all the rest.

Break the cycle of excitement and disappointment. You're putting impossible pressure on a game that doesn't even have a release date yet. It's not good for your own health, or for the reception of the game when it eventually comes out. At this rate, it'll never live up to all the hype, no matter how generation-definingly good it is. There'll be plenty of time to speculate wildly when Rockstar actually puts something out. Until then, everyone's better off if we focus our energy elsewhere.

That said, I'm not counting Rockstar out. It is a good time for a trailer: it's the end of the year, people are already talking about the one-year anniversary, and GTA Online will be a hot topic next week with the new DLC. I don't think we'll see a Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer today, maybe not even this week - but I have to believe there's some kind of update coming soon.
