With rumblings of other new Rockstar games in the works, an insider has suggested that Grand Theft Auto 6 is the only current-gen game in development at the studio. As of right now, the general public has no idea what Rockstar is working on outside of ing GTA Online and Red Dead Online. Naturally, given the success of GTA 5 and the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, many have assumed Grand Theft Auto 6 is next.
Rumors have suggested that the canceled Bully 2 is being revived, but the idea has yet to be corroborated by Rockstar itself. As one of the most popular classic Rockstar games, fans have been hoping for a return to the Bully series for some time, but Rockstar has remained quiet on its potential future. The sequel was reportedly canceled in the early 2010s in favor of shifting team to more urgent titles like Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto 5. The game was shelved and Rockstar seemingly never returned to it, instead opting to repurpose some systems into other games.
Reputable leaker GTA 6 will be announced in 2022 and release in 2023, but no one knows for sure. Rockstar is planning to release a remaster of Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2022, so that may be the primary focus for the developer.
There were rumors that Rockstar would also remaster or remake other games like Red Dead Redemption if the GTA trilogy was a success. Given that game had a rocky reception and launch, it's hard to say if Rockstar will move forward with that, even though the trilogy was largely outsourced to another team. As of right now, it's unclear what the timeline for Rockstar's next original game will be.
There have been rumblings that suggest GTA 6 has had a chaotic development, but it's likely something fans won't have a better understanding of until it ends up releasing. Given how long it has taken to release, there is a high bar that Rockstar will have to sur. That level of pressure may make it difficult, but Rockstar has a lot of developers and studios which should mean the company can take the time it needs to make sure GTA 6 launches to a high standard.
