More than a year later, trailer recently hit a huge milestone and fans are clamoring for more footage from the game.
In what started as a retrospective of the release of Grand Theft Auto 4 on its 17th anniversary, former Rockstar North developer Obbe Vermeij (via GamesRadar) weighed in with a tweet on the GTA 6 trailer discourse. "If it was my call I wouldn’t release any additional trailers," he said. "There is more than enough hype around [GTA 6] and the element of surprise is going to make the release only bigger as an event." In the replies, Vermeij says he s the idea of Rockstar announcing a release date and nothing else in the lead-up to GTA 6.
Former Rockstar North Developer Says The GTA 6 Excitement Is Already High Enough
Is GTA 6 Too Big To Fail?
Vermeij's idea is theoretically sound; if there's any game that's too hyped to fail, it's Grand Theft Auto 6. Rumors regarding it were swirling for years before the game was officially acknowledged by Rockstar, and fans excitedly dug through more than 90 leaked GTA 6 videos in what is one of the largest gaming security breaches of all time.
While announcing a release date ahead of time wouldn't qualify it as a shadow drop, leveraging the element of surprise has been a major advantage for certain games in the past. Just recently, the long-rumored Oblivion Remastered exploded in popularity after being revealed and released simultaneously. The name recognition behind The Elder Scrolls is clearly a factor, and there's arguably no bigger name in the industry than Grand Theft Auto.
Vermeij Left Rockstar After GTA 4, Has No Insider Knowledge About GTA 6
He's Been Left In The Dark With Us
While Vermeij's insight on GTA 4's development is interesting, it's important to keep in mind his thoughts on GTA 6's launch strategy are purely speculation. He even preempted questions, saying, "Before you ask; I have no inside info" about GTA 6. Vermeij left Rockstar after GTA 4 was released, citing a larger development team as a reason he didn't enjoy working as much as he used to.
Vermeij is patiently waiting like the rest of us. As far as anyone publicly knows, GTA 6 is on track for a release sometime later in 2025 – Rockstar parent company Take-Two has suggested a few times that fall 2025 is the desired launch window, likely to get the game out before the holiday season. Another trailer would certainly be welcome, but it's hard to deny Grand Theft Auto 6's current strategy is working. It's so hotly anticipated that it really might not need another trailer.
