Rockstar’s Most GTA 6 rumors have been far-fetched at best, with many focusing on a return to Vice City, though, nothing has been confirmed by either Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive.
GTA: San Andreas made franchise history with a bit more immersive gameplay, with players able to take the protagonist, CJ, to the gym to buff him up or eat a ton of fast food so much that he puts on a lot of weight. From improving weapon and driving skills to pursuing romantic interests, San Andreas was one of the first GTA titles to offer more player freedom in the form of choice while remaining true to Rockstar’s over-the-top lethality.
Revealed in a YouTube video posted by ArcadiaSquad, GTA: San Andreas remade in Unreal Engine is the best the franchise has ever looked. The project was developed by three friends and provides a look at what the Rockstar classic could look like on next-generation consoles. The video mostly cycles through the scenery of the San Andreas map, showing glimpses of NPCs walking around the area, and the improvements over its predecessor are beyond noticeable. This remade version of San Andreas is not playable, however, and only offers an idea of what San Andreas could look like if it were remade using modern technology.
Since the video’s debut a week ago, fan comments have been a mix of complementary and satirical. The general consensus is the conceptual remake is breathtaking, while the satirical ones center around Take-Two Interactive slapping ArcadiaSquad with a Cease and Desist letter followed by possible legal action – which isn't unheard of. The latter’s sentiment is expressed clearly by one commenter who said, “Don’t get your hopes up, when Rockstar finds out about this they are going to sue them unfortunately.”
Veteran gamers have always craved remakes of some of their favorite older titles, and it’s rare that developers deliver on those desires. It’s true that some classics do see remakes, such as the recent stream of remakes in the Knights of the Old Republic remake titled Apeiron. Perhaps it’s a good thing the scales are so imbalanced, however, as constant remakes – while fun and interesting – can get stale and boring. New ideas, or new twists on old ideas, are far more intriguing in the greater scheme.
GTA: San Andreas is available on PC and PS4 backwards compatibility.
