After several years of early access, GTFO is finally out as a proper full-release video game. The news came during The Game Awards, the place where GTFO was first revealed in 2017. The game was released in early access in 2019, where it achieved a bit of a cult following, but has never really managed to take off as a super popular co-op title.

Currently, co-op games like Back 4 Blood are dominating the genre. Ex-developers from the Left 4 Dead team essentially created a spiritual successor to the iconic zombie game, capturing the hearts of longtime fans and newcomers alike. Alongside its PlayStation and PC releases, Back 4 Blood also got a big helping hand as a day one Xbox Game release. With such , it's going to be difficult for a game like GTFO to have a notable resurgence, but the news may help.

After two years in early access, GTFO is available as a full game in its 1.0 state on Steam. The game got a stealth launch during The Game Awards courtesy of developer 10 Chambers, and according to SteamCharts, the game is getting a massive spike in players. The game is seeing the most amount of concurrent players since April 2021, which is a pretty impressive feat. That said, it's only about 1,700 players at the time of writing, so it's unclear just how sustainable this will be.

GTFO is currently only available on PC. It may struggle to hold players' attention, especially as co-op shooter Aliens: Fireteam Elite comes to Xbox Game later this month. Over the last six months, GTFO has largely failed to retain a healthy amount of concurrent players. The game has had a sub-1000 player count in the back half of 2021, but perhaps this move will allow the game to have a second life.

If not, it's unclear what GTFO's future will be. Now that the game is actually officially out, it's likely 10 Chambers will the game with additional post-launch content. 1.0 already comes with some new content and improvements, so hopefully, there's more to come in the future. As of right now, GTFO has a lot of competition that it has to contend with. has big plans for its future and Aliens: Fireteam Elite is only just getting started with its seasonal content. In 2022, there are even more co-op games with titles like Redfall, so it remains to be seen just how GTFO will stack up.
