The mutants have already started to trickle into the MCU, and while they haven't been explained yet Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the perfect place to do it. Marvel's mutants and the X-Men have a fairly complex backstory, as each character gets their powers from a rare mutated gene known as the X-Gene. Since they haven't been around since the start, the MCU has to figure out a way to explain why they're just now popping up, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is introducing one element that can explain the mutants' MCU presence.
Not much is known about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's story, with Marvel keeping plot details heavily under wraps. However, one key detail is known about the film: its villain. Chukwudi Iwuji will be ing the MCU as The High Evolutionary, a superhuman scientist known for his incredible intellect. While The High Evolutionary hasn't been seen the MCU before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, retconning him into the universe would perfectly explain how the mutants came to be.
Who Is The High Evolutionary?
In the comics, The High Evolutionary started out as a genetics student from Manchester, England named Herbert Edgar Wyndham. Although Wyndham found success in further evolving some animals, turning his Dalmatian into a smarter human-like life form, he soon realized that Earth was no place for his creations. Eventually, Wyndham left Earth to continue his experiments in space, taking up the mantle of The High Evolutionary. The High Evolutionary gained powers such as advanced strength, endurance, energy blasts, and even psychic abilities from experimenting on himself, with the character attempting to turn himself into the ultimate human life form.
Not much is known about The High Evolutionary's role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, except for the fact that he will be the main villain. It seems that the character will have some heavy ties to Rocket Raccoon's backstory, possibly being the geneticist that created him. The High Evolutionary will be a formidable opponent for the Guardians, with the villain closing out the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.
How The High Evolutionary Can Set Up The MCU's Mutants
Now that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch their powers, meaning that he has a track record for granting mutant abilities. The MCU will have to explain the mutants eventually, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's High Evolutionary seems like the most obvious way to do it.
