Thanos confronts his favorite daughter before the pair's fateful trip to Vormir. With Guardians of the Galaxy 3 being the original team's last hurrah, it will be Marvel's last chance to fix the mistake.

In Guardians of the Galaxy, the titular team is arrested by the Nova Corps and sent to the interstellar prison The Kyln. During processing a holographic display reads: "Origin: Last survivor of the Zehoberei people" while Gamora is on-screen. In a flashback in Infinity War, however, Thanos' army of Chitauri massacres half of Gamora's people, including her parents. Later in the film, Thanos informs his favorite daughter that since his intervention the Zehoberei people have gone from living on a planet "on the brink of collapse" to their children being born with "nothing but full bellies and clear skies."

While it would be easy to decry this as a plot hole, Avengers: Infinity War directors the Russo Brothers may have provided an explanation at a Q&A event in 2018. The directing duo implied (Source: @slashfilm/Twitter) that Thanos had lied to his adoptive daughter, asking the audience: "Who do you believe? Do you believe Thanos or Gamora?" Thanos is a character blinded by his own messiah complex, and therefore it wouldn't be a stretch to think that he lied about the state of the Zehoberei. Thanos likely assumes that the Zehoberei is thriving since his intervention and subsequently uses that "fact" to justify his actions. Nonetheless, the indiscriminate nature of Thanos' massacres will have inevitably taken the lives of people with the knowledge and skills to keep society running. Aside from the sudden impact on the planet's ecosystem drastically affecting the quantity of food, the loss of figures like doctors and farmers may have led the surviving Zehoberei to a quick extinction.

Why Gamora's Backstory Is Perfect For Guardians Of The Galaxy 3

Avengers endgame gamora Ravagers guardians of the galaxy

In Avengers: Endgame an alternate timeline Gamora travels from this point in her life to the modern day. While Thanos may be ignorant of the Zehoberei's extinction, Gamora is not. In this case, it would make sense that during her search for the Soul Stone she visited her home world. A flashback to Gamora discovering the remains of the Zehoberei in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 would hit hard after the events of Avengers: Endgame. While the Avengers managed to bring back the victims of the Blip, civilizations purged by Thanos during his quest for the Infinity Stones are gone. This wound will be fresher in the new Gamora's mind and dealing with it may be the crux of her Guardians Vol. 3 arc.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has the perfect counter to Thanos' infallibility and can solve a plot hole at the same time. Through Gamora, the film can demonstrate firsthand how short-sighted and flawed Thanos' plan was. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 can explore a post-Blip galaxy and finally lay to rest the misguided idea that Thanos had the right idea, just the wrong execution.
