James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy has produced some truly iconic moments and quotes. Making their MCU debut in 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy took a lesser-known Marvel Comics team and turned them into one of the studio’s most beloved. Led by the Celestial-Human Star-Lord, the galactic team of misfits has come a long way since their first meeting.
The Guardians have won over audiences with their family dynamic, with moments in the Guardians of the Galaxy films ranging from comedic to heart-warming. From Gamora to Drax, every member of the team has had their iconic lines and moments to shine. Reliving the highlights from the trilogy after its recent conclusion, these quotes embody the best moments from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
1 “You Said It Yourself, B-tch. We’re The Guardians Of The Galaxy.”
Whenever someone name-drops the team name in an MCU film, it is always an exciting moment. The first film explored the Guardians as they reluctantly came together as a group, but by the confrontation against Ronan, they had come to understand each other somewhat better. Earlier on, Ronan had referred to the team as the Guardians of the Galaxy in an almost mocking way. So when Thanos’ ally was caught off guard by the mortal Peter Quill withstanding the strength of the Power Stone, Peter retaliates with this quote. It was the first time the team acknowledged their name, and was just the beginning of their journey.
2 "Nothing Goes Over My Head! My Reflexes Are Too Fast, I Would Catch It!"
Drax is one of the MCU’s funniest characters because of his complete brutal honesty and unwavering belief in himself. This, combined with his inability to read the room or understand metaphors, cemented him as the Guardians’ comedic relief, which the first film played into. When Rocket is explaining to the rest of the team how the Kylosian race takes everything literally, Drax responds with that quote in an attempt to prove that he can in fact understand metaphors. Drax’s purpose as solely the comedic relief became a concern as the trilogy went on, but being able to see his serious side in Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 only makes these comedic quotes all the more memorable.
3 "Dance Off, Bro."
As a human, a big part of Peter Quill’s character has always been his love of music and dancing. Though it starts as a fun detail, Peter’s ion for dancing actually comes in handy at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy. Facing off for the Power Stone, Peter is able to temporarily distract Ronan with some impromptu dance moves, uttering this quote so the rest of the team could get into position.
4 “We Are Groot.”
Groot was able to win over the hearts of audiences with just a single line. “I am Groot” quickly became iconic in the MCU as it seemed like he could only say this one thing, though it conveyed a scale of emotions. There have only been two instances of deviance, with the first coming near the end of Guardians of the Galaxy. Sacrificing himself to save the Guardians during the Battle of Xandar, Groot wraps his branches around the team and says this heart-warming line, solidifying the Guardians as a new family.
5 "Someday I’m Going To Make Great Machines That Fly. And Me And My Friends Are Going To Go Flying Together Into The Forever And Beautiful Sky. Lila, Teefs, Floor, And Me, Rocket."
The Guardians franchise rose in popularity among the MCU due to its focus on comedy, which made the emotional moments in the trilogy all the more touching. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was the perfect wrap-up for the franchise as it closed out multiple character stories, with a big emphasis on Rocket the Raccoon. Delving into his tragic backstory, the film showed his past friendship with three other experiments of the High Evolutionary. Though Rocket was the only one able to successfully escape, his friends’ memories lived on with him, and would go on to encourage Rocket to be a part og the Guardians.
6 “You’re A Bad Dog!”
Even though Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 took a much darker, serious turn than the previous two films in the franchise, there were still classic quips and jokes. Cosmo the Spacedog was originally on display in the Collector’s museum, but was freed after it was destroyed by the Power Stone. With the Guardians purchasing Knowhere as their new base, Cosmo ed the team as its newest member. Cosmo’s focus is on her friendship with Kraglin in Vol. 3, which leaves her hurt and betrayed when the other calls her a bad dog. The line makes for one of the movie’s funniest running gags.
7 “Open The F-cking Door.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 broke numerous records at the box office, garnering lots of success. Among the film’s achievements was the MCU’s first uncensored F-bomb, with Peter using it in his frustration with Nebula. With the Guardians always being a more scrappy, rag-tag team than others like the Avengers or the Eternals, it made sense that the MCU’s first F-bomb would go to them.
8 “Did That Look Cool?”
Throughout Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, several characters continuously ask the team if they look cool doing certain actions. However, the most memorable use of this quote has to be by Peter. Going into Vol. 3, many expected characters to die considering it was the end of their arc. When the team destroys the High Evolutionary’s ship, Peter goes back for his cherished Zune and almost loses his life because of it. At the moment, it seemed like Star-Lord truly was going to die, only for Adam Warlock to save him. Peter uttering the running gag line after this was sure to provide both laughs and relief for audiences, as it cemented that the hero would live on.
9 "We're Just Like Kevin Bacon."
Kevin Bacon is heavily associated with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, which is funny considering the actor never made an appearance in the main trilogy. Because one of Peter’s obsessions from Earth includes the film Footloose, he’s always seen Bacon as an idol of sorts. His love for the actor spread among the team as the Guardians got closer, though the others get a bit mixed up about what exactly Bacon did on Earth. When the team breaks into Ronan’s ship to save Xandar, Gamora muses that they’re just like the legendary hero who allegedly saved Earth, proving the rest of the team have a warped understanding of his career.
10 “There Are Two Types Of Beings In The Universe: Those Who Dance, And Those Who Do Not."
Another instance of Drax’s great comedic timing, Drax said this line in a conversation with Peter as a way to convey his understanding. Again using the running theme of dance, Drax tells Peter that he does in fact understand what differentiates beings in the universe. It would’ve been played off as a simple joke coming from any other of the Guardians, but the fact that Drax said it with full seriousness is what makes the quote so effective.
