Ghost of Tsushima isn't the first game to abandon waypoints. It is, however, the first to use such an innovative and immersive method of guiding the player to objectives. There are no markers sitting at the top of the screen during travel. A true Samurai knows their path, and Jin Sakai is no different.

The Guiding Wind is the most essential mechanic in the game. It adds not only a path for the players to follow, but also enhances the game's beauty immensely. The wind has a variety of uses outside of the normal objectives. Guiding Wind Upgrades are an additional feature that allow players to get a direct guide to things that other players may overlook. Here's how to use Guiding Wind upgrades in Ghost of Tsushima.

Like all upgrades, Guiding Wind Upgrades are found in the Techniques menu. Checking underneath the Samurai section will reveal a set of upgrades called "Exploration". These upgrades are used to program the Guiding Wind to direct the player to specific locations that will enhance the player's skill or get them special items. The following locations can be selected in this menu:

  • Hot Springs
  • Bamboo Strikes
  • Shinto Shrines
  • Fox Dens
  • Pillars of Honor and Vanity Gear

Each of these locations provides the player with an enhancement of some kind. Most of the enhancements in the game are based around collectibles. Fox Shrines can be found and collected in order to gain Charm slots, for instance. Spending upgrade points on Guiding Wind Upgrades can allow players to find these collectibles faster.

When players spend upgrade points on Exploration, they unlock a waypoint on the map that will lead them to collectibles. The only thing left for players to get is the Traveler's Attire. The Traveler's Attire has a variety of uses for players while they traverse the map. The attire can help players clear out more fog on the map and alert them when there is a collectible nearby.

After the Guiding Wind Upgrade has been purchased, players will be able to select a collectible on the map screen and be directed toward the nearest one. This will only work if the player has the Traveler's Attire equipped at the time. After the upgrade is purchased, players will be able to use this as many times as they need to. This can dramatically increase the player's ability to enhance their skills while exploring the map.
