Warning: Contains spoilers for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX has been drawing plenty of rightful attention from fans from the moment it was announced. A new Gundam anime would always be a big deal, but with GQuuuuuuX being made in collaboration with Studio Khara of Neon Genesis Evangelion fame, with Hideaki Anno even being involved in production, there’s been more hype around it than most other Gundam projects in recent years.
The incredible talent behind GQuuuuuuX’s production has been a major draw, but an even bigger draw has been the anime’s bizarre title. While Gundam anime have had weird titles in the past, GQuuuuuuX is especially nonsensical through its confusing spelling and pronunciation, and because of that, one of the main reasons people have been watching Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX has been to try and figure out what the title is supposed to mean. There still isn’t a definitive answer, of course, but even with what little has been done in the series so far, there’s plenty to guess at.
The New Gundam Anime’s Title Makes No Sense, But That’s On Purpose
GQuuuuuuX's Ridiculous Name Makes More Sense Than People Think
Ever since it was first announced, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX has been noted to be a weird title for an anime, and it’s not just fans and critics who feel that way. After Machu stole the Gundam GQuuuuuuX and the Pomeranians analyzed its data, they noted how weird its name was and even had trouble pronouncing it, meaning that even in-universe, GQuuuuuuX is supposed to be a ridiculous name for something. The Gundam franchise treats names like Quattro Bajeena, Master Asia, and Allelujah Haptism as being completely normal, so if GQuuuuuuX is seen as weird, that’s saying a lot.
All of that, of course, seems to be intentional. When the Pomeranians were analyzing the data of the GQuuuuuuX, they discovered that “GQuuuuuuX” was just a codename and that its true name was hidden away somewhere, meaning the Gundam GQuuuuuuX’s ridiculous name could be a cover for something more in line with the franchise, possibly a reference to another Gundam from the Universal Century timeline. That could work itself into a great twist, so hopefully, there will be a good payoff to it all.
Which Gundam Could Be The Gundam GQuuuuuuX’s True Identity?
The Various Options For The GQuuuuuuX's True Identity
With GQuuuuuuX being a codename, there’s bound to be a big reveal about its identity, and there are plenty of routes to go with that. The White Gundam has canonically been used as the basis for other Mobile Suits in the Universal Century timeline, with one notable example being the Gundam Alex from Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. That doesn’t mean it would be the Alex, but at the very least, there’s plenty of reason to believe the GQuuuuuuX could be an alternate take on one of the many Gundams canonically based on the White Gundam.

20 Years Ago, a Gundam Anime Took Over the United States, And I Finally Get Why
Gundam Wing was a turning point for anime in America. Now, the franchise faces the challenge of capturing a new generation.
Another possibility stems from the GQuuuuuuX’s similarities to the Unicorn Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. Both Gundams have transformable cockpits and the ability to hide their faces with their V-fins depending on what mode they’re in, and while that could be a coincidence, the similarities between the GQuuuuuuX and the Unicorn Gundam still suggest that the GQuuuuuuX could be an alternate version of the Unicorn Gundam.
Something that would be really out there would be for the GQuuuuuuX to be one of Char’s Mobile Suits. GQuuuuuuX episode #4 showed that Char stealing the White Gundam led to Zeon developing the Gelgoog instead of the Earth Federation, so the changes to the Universal Century timeline could have caused Char’s Mobile Suits to be developed as Gundams instead of regular Mobile Suits. That would make it even more fitting for Machu to be using it alongside the Red Gundam’s new pilot, Shuji Ito, but this early into the series, all of that is still speculation.
Does The Gundam GQuuuuuuX Need A Connection To The Universal Century?
Why Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Is Fine As It Is
As great as making the GQuuuuuuX a pre-established Mobile Suit would be, part of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX’s appeal is that it’s supposed to be a Universal Century story people can jump into without needing extensive knowledge of the decades of material that came before it, so the Gundam GQuuuuuuX being its own thing rather than a pre-established Gundam would be the best way of maintaining its easy accessibility. That idea has been working great for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX so far; hopefully, it will stick to that until the very end.
