What Gwen Stacy's MCU Debut Means

Gwen Stacy Will Make Her MCU Debut In Animation Before Live-Action

Gwen Stacy's MCU introduction will come more than twelve years after Emma Stone famously played Peter Parker's girlfriend in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man and more than eighteen years after Bryce Dallas Howard played the first live-action iteration of the character in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. So far, the MCU has only mentioned Gwen through Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where he revealed to his multiversal variants that he failed to save her. While it's unknown whether a live-action Gwen Stacy exists in the MCU's main timeline, the existence of a Gwen Stacy variant in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man suggests there's a slight chance of her Earth-616 counterpart making her debut eventually.

Every Marvel Villain Confirmed To Exist In The MCU's New Spider-Man Universe

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man introduced a swathe of classic and modern Marvel villains, many of which have been reimagined for the series.

When Spider-Man: No Way Home was in development, Marvel Studios toyed with many options for its multiversal characters. A few early versions of Spider-Man: No Way Home's plot didn't have multiversal villains at all, and some featured characters like Mysterio, Vulture, and America Chavez. At some point, Marvel considered bringing Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy back, which would have made Spider-Man: No Way Home Gwen's first official MCU appearance. While it may be disappointing that Tom Holland's Peter Parker won't meet Gwen Stacy yet, Gwen's introduction in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2 is great news for such an iconic Spider-Man character.

The MCU's First Gwen Stacy Will Add A New Dynamic To Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 1 lays the foundations for two of Peter Parker's possible romantic relationships with Peter's crush on Pearl Pangan and Nico Minoru's subtle signs of attraction to Peter. Gwen Stacy is usually introduced as Peter Parker's first true love, meaning that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2 could create a love triangle that flips Gwen's traditional role as Peter's friend-turned-girlfriend, instead making her more similar to Mary Jane Watson — Peter's love-at-first-sight crush who eventually becomes his girlfriend. Given how Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man makes significant changes to the events taking place on Earth-616, it will be interesting to see how Gwen Stacy plays into Spider-Man's early career as a superhero.
