Warning! Spoilers for Gwen-Verse by Marvel Comics
Marvel Comics will soon be taking readers into the Gwen-Verse, where a Wolverine variant of Gwen Stacy will play a role in the series. Artist Peach Momoko's design for "Gwenverine" turns the popular character into a clawed hero, with a new costume and look that makes Stacy more badass and dangerous than ever before. Gwenverine is set to appear in the Gwen-Verse #2.
Earlier this month, Marvel Comics revealed a brand new limited series called Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse from Tim Seeley and Jodi Nishijima. The five-issue comic will feature the most popular Gwen Stacy variant, Spider-Gwen, meeting more versions of herself across the Multiverse. Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #1's cover by David Nakayama hinted at some of the variants Spider-Gwen will encounter, including versions of Captain Marvel, Thor, and Captain America, as well as showcasing Gwenverine. Additional covers that will appear on other Marvel Comics titles also showcased Gwen Stacy variants of the X-Men, including Jean Grey, Polaris, and Cyclops. Now, readers get a closer look at the Wolverine variant of Gwen Stacy, courtesy of artist Peach Momoko.
Peach Momoko's design for Gwenverine for Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #2 was revealed by Marvel Comics. The design page features Gwenverine's costume, which is made from leather and features a black and yellow hood, similar to Spider-Gwen's. Gwen also has a Wolverine-inspired sweater and pants with a similar color scheme. Like Wolverine, Gwenverine has three claws coming from each hand. In Momoko's notes, she shares that the variant of Gwen ties her hair back to make it seem like she has short hair while keeping it long in the front.
Marvel had introduced a Wolverine variant of Gwen Stacy before, as the hero made an appearance in Secret Wars: Battleworld #3. In that comic, Mojo collected different Wolverine's from across the Multiverse and had them fight to the death. The story featured everyone from Ant-Man Wolverine, Sentinel Wolverine, Galactus Wolverine, Spider-Man Wolverine, Hulk Wolverine, and so much more. More than 20 different variants of Wolverine appeared in the issue, including Gwenverine. It's unclear if this version is the same character.
No matter what Earth this version of Gwenverine ultimately originates from, Peach Momoko's design for the Wolverine-based character is an exciting tease for what should be an entertaining series from Marvel Comics. Readers can see Gwen Stacy variants in action when the Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse series arrives in comic book shops in February 2022.
