X-31 Reveals Herself as Gwen Stacy Marvel

Anyone slightly familiar with Spider-Man lore re the tragic fate of his first love. As seen in the infamous “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” storyline, Gwen was kidnapped by the Green Goblin and during the confrontation she was thrown from a bridge, only for her neck to snap when Spider-Man attempted to save her. While the death marked the end of Gwen as a recurring character, it wasn’t the last time she was seen, as she was cloned several times. She was also briefly resurrected during the “A.X.E.: Judgment Day” event, but beyond that, Gwen has been dead for years.

Despite the fake-outs of years past, Marvel Comics has emphasized that this isn’t a trick and that X-31 really is Gwen Stacy. Given how Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense went haywire, it makes sense as this is seriously messed up. The real question is, why would anyone in the Marvel Universe want to resurrect Gwen? What is there to gain from not only bringing her to life but turning her into an extremely deadly assassin? Sure, it causes Peter an immense amount of emotional pain, but is there more that meets the eye when it comes to the new and improved Gwen Stacy?

X-31 Meets Gwenpool Marvel

Sure, bringing a character like Gwen back from the dead to turn her into a lethal weapon might seem like bad taste. But crazier things have happened in the Marvel Universe. Maybe the Grand Architect wants to target Spider-Man and torment him using Gwen. Whatever the reason for her resurrection, she’s back, and she’s got a new life as X-31. Hopefully, there’s still a bit of the old Gwen Stacy still somewhere inside X-31. While it’s interesting to see this darker take on the classic Marvel character, it’s going to be hard to top the original Gwen.

Gwenpool #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
