After a streak of Marvel movies and a critical flop, Gwyneth Paltrow is finally returning to the big screen with an A24 movie. Gwyneth Paltrow has enjoyed a successful movie career since her start in 1991. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, she stayed relatively busy, starring in popular movies such as Shakespeare in Love, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and The Royal Tenenbaums. In 2008, she pivoted to her first big franchise: Iron Man. From there, most of Paltrow's career has been dedicated to portraying Pepper Potts — that is, until now.
Notably, Paltrow has been largely absent from Hollywood since the 2010s. From 2014 to 2019, she starred in only one film per year, except a few documentaries. Likely, this is because Paltrow was focused on growing her wellness and lifestyle company, Goop. Regardless, audiences have seen much less of Paltrow, and more importantly, less of the actress in new and unique roles. Though Pepper Potts is a beloved Marvel character, viewers are ready to see Paltrow flex her acting muscles again in a strong feature film.
A24's Marty Supreme Is Gwyneth Paltrow's First Non-Marvel Movie Since 2015
What Is Marty Supreme About?
Fortunately, those who are eager to see Gwyneth Paltrow's return outside of the MCU won't have to wait too much longer. According to Entertainment Weekly, Paltrow has been cast in an unspecified role in Josh Safdie's film, Marty Supreme. This will be the first non-Marvel movie that Paltrow will appear in since 2015. It is important to note as well that Paltrow's last non-Marvel film, Mortdecai, performed horribly at the box office with $47 million and earned a measly 12% on Rotten Tomatoes. Thus, Marty Supreme can be a return to form for the actor.
Gwyneth Paltrow has also appeared in recent TV series such as The Politician and American Horror Story.
Not much is known about Marty Supreme at this time besides who is involved. Josh Safdie of the famous Safdie brothers will be co-writing and directing the movie. Timothée Chalamet will also be starring in Marty Supreme, presumably as the eponymous Marty. He will also be a producer. Apparently, Marty Supreme is inspired by the true story of a professional ping-pong player. Many believe this to be Marty Reisman. Either way, more information likely won't be clear until closer to the film's release.
Gwyneth Paltrow Breaking Away From Marvel Is Just What She Needs
Paltrow Needs To Venture Out Of The MCU Bubble
Ultimately, her role in Marty Supreme is just what Gwyneth Paltrow needs right now. Though she has remained on the big screen for years, her contributions have been small. Marvel is a big and notable franchise, but Paltrow's role in the movies, while important, was usually brief. Marty Supreme poses a new challenge for the actor. Paltrow needs to prove that she still has what it takes to play an intriguing new character. Moving away from Pepper Potts will show that Gwyneth Paltrow is ready for a new era in her career.
