left Early Access in 2020 and launched on PC and Nintendo Switch, where it quickly garnered universal praise and a number of awards.
Hades is a roguelike dungeon crawler set in the underworld of Greek mythology. The game stars Zagreus, the son of Hades, who is attempting to escape from the halls of the dead and make his way to Mount Olympus. Hades has been praised for its incredible gameplay, beautiful artwork, and an unlock system that encourages multiple playthroughs. Despite being an indie game, Hades challenged titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and The Last of Us Part 2 for game of the year awards around the world.
Hades finally hit PlayStation and Xbox systems in August, which included a launch on Xbox Game . According to Twisted Voxel, Hades has already become the highest-ranked game on Metacritic for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S systems. It currently sits at a Metacritic score of 94 on Xbox Series X/S and a 93 on PS5. It bears mentioning that Hades was unable to take the top spot on the Nintendo Switch's Metacritic ranking, as it was outclassed by Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at launch.
For the PS5 Metacritic score, Hades has supplanted Demon's Souls, which is the remake of the progenitor of the Dark Souls series. Demon's Souls was one of the few PS5 launch exclusives and it quickly racked up a lot of positive reviews, but the reception wasn't as positive as the one for Hades. Currently, Demon's Souls has a Metacritic score of 92. For the Xbox Series X/S Metacritic score, Hades supplanted the console version of Microsoft Flight Simulator, which has a Metacritic score of 90.
Landing two top Metacritic scores is a great feat for Hades, but it's unlikely to last until the end of the year. In November, the GTAV are set to be released. Grand Theft Auto V is tied with Red Dead Redemption 2 for the highest-ranked Metacritic score for PS4 and Xbox One, with a score of 97. It's likely that the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game will see similar results, leading to Zagreus being banished back to the underworld.
Hades is available now for Nintendo Switch, macOS, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
