Over the past four decades, the the fictional town of Haddonfield, Illinois, and stalks a young babysitter, Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends. All the while, Michael's psychiatrist Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) pursues him, trying to keep Haddonfield safe.
Halloween, of course, went on to spawn an entire film franchise, which has gained a cult following over the decades. As of summer 2020, the franchise comprises 11 total films. Rob Zombie released a remake of the movie in 2007, followed by a sequel in 2009. The 2018 sequel, though, retconned all previous sequels, serving as a direct sequel to the original film instead. Halloween Kills, a sequel to that installment, is scheduled to come out in October 2021, and the final installment, Halloween Ends, will come out in 2022; the original release dates were delayed due to Covid-19.
The original Halloween features a climactic ending which sees Michael and Laurie battle inside the home of Tommy Doyle, the child Laurie is babysitting on Halloween night. As Michael breaks through the door of a bedroom closet in an attempt to reach Laurie, she picks up his fallen knife and stabs him in the chest, seemingly killing him. But as she begins to walk away, he suddenly gets up and tries to strangle her. Loomis appears and shoots Michael—six times—which causes him to fall over a balcony. At this moment, viewers think that Michael surely must have died. But when Loomis looks over the balcony, there's no body to be found.
Every Way Michael Myers "Died" In The Halloween Movies
This act of Michael apparently "dying" occurs numerous times through the entire franchise. He always appears to have been killed, but he miraculously survives each time. In Halloween II, he is shot in both eyes and blown up. In Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, he is hit by a truck and shot more than 20 times. In Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, he is tranquilized and beaten. In the theatrical cut of Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers, he is beaten with a lead pipe and hanged. In Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, he is stabbed, thrown from a vehicle, and then beheaded. In Halloween: Resurrection, Michael Myers is electrocuted and burned.
In the first Rob Zombie remake, the final shot sees Laurie aim and shoot a gun at Michael, but he grabs her wrist just as the shot is fired, making it unclear if he was killed. In that movie's sequel, Michael hands Laurie his knife to kill him. In 2018's Halloween, meanwhile, Laurie—along with her daughter and granddaughter—trap Michael in a basement safe room and set the house on fire. The final scene pans over the burning basement, but Michael isn't seen. In the post-credits scene, though, his breathing is heard, indicating that he survived and will appear in the 2021 sequel. Who's to say if Michael will finally, actually die in one of the sequels.
