Halo Season 3 Chances Get Hopeful Update From Star After Acclaimed Season 2

Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Halo season 2, episode 8, "Halo"!

Summary

  • Joseph Morgan shares his excitement for the Flood's introduction in the Halo season 2 finale.
  • Morgan was thrilled to see the special effects and makeup used to bring the alien parasitic form to life on set, particularly as a fan of the games.
  • The star also teases that the Flood's introduction in the season 2 finale has major ramifications for the future of the show.

Halo season 2 star Joseph Morgan unveils how the horrific events of the finale's Flood outbreak both pleased him as a fan and left him eager to see how the show explores its expansion. Paramount+'s adaptation of the hit video game franchise explores the exploits of Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber), a super soldier in the midst of an intergalactic war with the alien faction, the Covenant. The season finale, "Halo", saw an ancient parasite called The Flood escape containment and spread across the ONI installation on Onyx, unleashing a near-unstoppable, all-consuming horror on the known universe.

As Halo season 2 comes to a close, Morgan unveiled his excitement upon seeing the Flood brought to screen to Screen Rant. With his familiarity with the games, Morgan, who portrays the now-former ONI leader Colonel James Ackerson, was eager to see the parasite adapted and act out the story, while also teasing that their introduction will lead to major ramifications on the show's future should it receive a renewal. Check out Morgan's response below:

Oh, it was great. I mean, having played the games as well, I had an idea of what I was supposed to be imagining, and then the effects makeup that they did, the special effects makeup and stuff, was pretty intense and incredible. So yeah, it was really exciting. There's a certain element of using your imagination, which is part of the job anyway, so you just have to more vividly imagine what's happening.

But yeah, it was exciting, mostly as well, because I knew how much introducing that element would mean to the fandom of Halo, being one of those fans myself, how excited I was to read the script and go, "Oh, we're doing the Flood? Oh my God, we're doing the Flood!" [Chuckles]

So, being on set and being a part of that, I would've been devastated if I wasn't in some way a part of that storyline as it starts to affect the characters... But now, I feel like, especially with the introduction of the Flood now, season 3 is going to be epic if we get to do that.

Halo Season 2's Flood Outbreak Hints The Parasite's At An Extremely Deadly Stage

Flood-infected UNSC and ONI personnel in Halo season 2

Within the Halo universe, the Flood is always an inevitability that forces the universe to undergo great change ever since the parasite was first discovered by ancient humanity before the construction of the titular installations. Between leading to the ancient Forerunners combating and devolving ancient humanity, to creating the deadly ringworlds and other horrific devices in hopes of suppressing the parasite, the Flood ultimately brought an end to the reign of the Forerunners. While the UNSC and Covenant are preoccupied with their war, the Flood will inevitably force each faction to shift priorities if they hope to ever survive.

Although the Halo season 2 finale introduces viewers to the Flood, it doesn't have time to delve into the parasite's full backstory ahead of season 3.

Furthermore, Halo season 2's finale only showed the early stages of a Flood outbreak while hinting towards their horrific potential. Within season 2, the Onyx outbreak saw the ONI staff show early, yet still terrifying, symptoms of an infection, but the unfortunate scientist's mutation into a Combat Form in the prison and the reveal that Kwan Ha's (Yerin Ha's) mysterious guide The Mother (Olwen Fouéré) was in-fact a long-consumed individual hinted that the parasite already had a strong collective consciousness. With these factors, The Flood may have already developed into a state too powerful to contain on Onyx.

The Master Chief and UNSC may have a foothold on the mysterious Halo, but something greater and far more terrifying has begun to spread. As human and Covenant forces fight for the ring, the Flood not only has a chance to grow its numbers, but has the minds of two of humanity's brightest and most powerful individuals within its grasp with Parangosky (Shabana Azmi) and Halsey (Natascha McElhone). With this potential knowledge and a vital human world consumed, Morgan's tease of the Flood's galaxy-wide potential could lead to the series' most terrifying fight in a potential Halo season 3.

Halo season 2 is available to watch in its entirety on Paramount+.
