Speaking to EW, showrunner Bruce Miller revealed that the show will begin exploring the lives of those who have escaped from Gilead and the challenges they will face. But Miller also acknowledged that with how well season 1 did, it has almost become another challenge for the new season since now expectations are so much higher. “You sort of intimidate yourself,” Miller said on the subject. “But at a certain point, you can’t spend all your time second-guessing things. Instead, you just have to to try and tell a good story.” EW also revealed three new photos from season 2.

With the author of the 1985 novel, Margaret Atwood, being a consultant on the show, it’s hard to see it veering too far away from her vision. And Miller’s determination to tell a good story has worked so far, so season 2 has good momentum behind it.

The relevance of the show in today’s cultural climate has also not been lost on many people. A dystopian future for women may not be right around the corner, but mistreatment of women was very common to see in 2017 headlines. Seeing as how those issues are extending into 2018, The Handmaid’s Tale is a great show for exploring similar issues in a dramatized environment.

The early images also continue to show the captivating world viewers have grown used to, giving us sneak peeks into the lives of the earlier mentioned refugees escaping from Gilead. Also shown is a scene from a funeral service for one of the handmaids, making it clear loss and tragedy will continue to be strong themes in the season. One thing that’s clear is the journey for Offred is far from over.
