The Handmaid's Tale season 6 will see June (Elisabeth Moss) going up against Gilead one last time, the 10-episode season bringing a conclusion to her story. At the same time, both the show itself and teasers for the episodes indicate she hasn't fully made a choice yet about whether she wants a relationship with Luke (O-T Fagbenle) or Nick (Max Minghella).

Speaking with ScreenRant, Chang carefully explained how The Handmaid's Tale season 6 will address June's choice between Nick or Luke. The co-showrunner explained how Luke is a forgiving person who's always stuck by her no matter what, while Nick gave her a reason to live during her most hopeless moments in Gilead. Luke has been her rock. He has stuck by her, and he has waited for her for years. No matter what she does when she comes out, he sees a woman who's his wife, who's been suffering and traumatized. And so he forgives a lot; forgives her ripping Fred apart and forgives her feelings for Nick. He doesn't like it at all, but he is really so stoic, and his love for her is so consistent and true.

And Nick too, his love for her is a beautiful thing, and it is unyielding. That relationship was really born out of the horrible trauma and the oppression that Gilead had. June really needed to find a reason for living or a purpose in her day-to-day life, and Nick gave her some of that. Both men, in their different ways, have really helped her survive.

But it is a really difficult situation for her to constantly be pulled between them. We find that people are either Nick shippers or Luke shippers, no in between.

Can The Show Offer A Concrete, Romantic Conclusion?

Both Luke and Nick helped June throughout the events of the show, each being there for her in their own way. For Nick, he tried his best to protect her from Gilead even in her darkest moments, ensuring her safety as much as he could even when he was promoted to Commander. As for Luke, he accidentally killed a Canadian citizen at the end of The Handmaid's Tale season 5 while protecting June, something that could lead to heightened tensions as the country becomes less tolerant of the refugees they're housing.

Chang's carefully-worded statement indicates there might be a plan for who June ends up with, but that the answer isn't going to be obvious. Because of the shared history she has with both men, alongside the cautious statement from the showrunner, the choice for who she ends up with seems like it could have been made. This might mean the end of June's story will involve whoever she chooses, making way for characters in The Testaments as she takes a step back from the spotlight. For now, though, the final fate of her relationship with both of them remains unknown.

This means The Handmaid's Tale could end without any romantic confirmation, depending on whether the show decides to prioritize it over its other long-standing storylines. For now, it seems like it could go either way as her mission continues, especially since her conflict with the country that took everything from her is far from over.
