Will Graham being the number one example.

Hannibal also seems to have some level of genuine positive feelings toward Alana Bloom, Bedelia Du Maurier, and of course, Abigail Hobbs, but it's impossible to be sure how much of this is real concern and how much is just Dr. Lecter enjoying using them for his own purposes. That's the thing about a person like Hannibal. Despite how likeable, suave, and sophisticated he can be, he's still a monstrous serial killer at the end of the day, and him liking someone's company may not outweigh his desire to murder, cook, and eat them.

Abigail Hobbs only appeared in a handful of Hannibal episodes, but for both Will and Hannibal, she proved to be a character vital to their arc's progression. Unfortunately, Hannibal eventually decided he had no recourse but to take her out of the picture.

Hannibal: Why Lecter Killed Abigail (Despite Their Connection)

hannibal season 1 episode 9 trou normand

After saving her life during the encounter that would ultimately kill her serial killer father Garret Jacob Hobbs, both Will and Hannibal developed seemingly paternal feelings toward Abigail. Both sought to protect her, but being who he is, Hannibal was all too willing to use her as part of his campaign to frame Will for his own crimes as the Chesapeake Ripper. Truthfully though, Hannibal's endgame seems to be for he and Will to form a makeshift family with Abigail, who he had led Will to believe was dead, but was in actuality very much alive. Unfortunately, after being cleared of the Ripper murders, Will feigns allegiance to Hannibal, as part of a campaign with Jack Crawford to expose his guilt.

Hannibal of course eventually figures out Will and Jack's plan, and instead of a happy reunion between Will and Abigail, Hannibal literally twists the knife into the man he feels betrayed him. Hannibal slowly and brutally slits Abigail's throat, causing her to bleed out and die. He also stabs and leaves Will bleeding on the floor, but he clearly wasn't intending to kill him, or he would have, as Hannibal is capable of surgically precise murder techniques. As much as he seemed to care about Abigail, at least in his very unique way, Hannibal was so hurt by Will's betrayal that Dr. Lecter chose to kill the person he felt Will cared about most.
