The release of a third instalment in the Happy Death Day series is not at all outside the boundaries of possibility. In a recent Twitter Q&A, producer James Blum responded to a fan enquiry for updates on the development of Happy Death Day 3, and while he gave very little away, he did indicate a third instalment in the Happy Death Day franchise is being worked on. The first two movies have an enthusiastic following, so it makes perfect sense that Blumhouse would want to continue this franchise.
In a recent exclusive interview with Screen Rant about her appearance in the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, Yarkin expresses a desire to return to the Happy Death Day franchise if Blumhouse ever moves forward with another sequel. After being informed that there have been rumblings of a Happy Death Day 3 being in development, she is enthusiastic about the idea, though she its she hasn't heard anything herself. She does reveal, however, that she’s still in touch with the Happy Death Day 2U cast and director Christopher Landon. Check out Yarkin’s comments below:
I would love it... I'll call Chris [Landon] and be like, "Yo, what's up?" I'm really close with Rachel Matthews and I'm still in touch with the whole cast. It was such an incredible experience and we constantly are like, "Do we think we're gonna get to do another?" It was just fun hanging out.
Yarkin’s character was still alive at the end of Happy Death Day 2U, so her return to the franchise would not be out of the question. After the first film took a page out of Groundhog Day’s book by ignoring the origin of the mysterious timeloop, Happy Death Day 2U introduced more concrete science-fiction elements, explaining that the time irregularities were caused by college students experimenting with a quantum reactor. This fusion of sci-fi concepts and slasher thrills has a lot of mileage, and could almost certainly sustain a longer franchise, comparable in length to the long-dormant Friday The 13th series.
While there’s currently no concrete information about when audiences can expect another Happy Death Day movie, horror fans are no longer starved for choice when it comes to slasher movies. In addition to exciting original fare such as Landon's Freaky and last year's Fear Street trilogy, multiple classic franchises are being rebooted and finding success, with a sequel to the recently released Scream movie already greenlit. While those films won't have the time-loop fun of Happy Death Day 3, they certainly make the wait for updates a little easier.
