SYFY has announced that Christmastime setting, and was met with a generally positive response from critics, praising the series’ darkly comic, over-the-top style and a hilarious, uncontrollably exuberant performance from series star Christopher Meloni, as the down-on-his-luck hitman Nick Sax.
The finale is set for tomorrow night, but now it appears that won’t be the last viewers will be seeing of Sax or his (and his daughter’s) imaginary friend, Happy (Patton Oswalt), as the network has given a green light to more insanely violent misadventures for Nick and the flying blue unicorn by his side. That episode, ‘I Am the Future’, promises a confrontation between Nick, Happy, and the demented killer with a Santa fetish who kidnapped Nick’s daughter Hailey. You can catch a sneak peek of the finale in the video above.

SYFY announced the news earlier today via an official press release that touted the first season’s zany appeal and promised that series creators Brian Taylor and Grant Morrison have more in store for the second season. The announcement came with a statement from NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment president Chris McCumber who said:
“HAPPY! struck a chord with our SYFY audience and disrupted the TV landscape with its unique storytelling and outrageous performances led by Christopher Meloni. If people thought this season was crazy – I can’t wait for fans to see what Grant Morrison, Brian Taylor and the entire cast and crew have in store for Sax and Happy!”
The news is somewhat surprising, considering the source material was a fairly closed-ended four-issue miniseries from a few years ago. But Morrison himself recently said he and Taylor have ideas for Happy! that would carry it through at least three seasons, and now it appears they’ll have the chance to implement at least some of those ideas. That is likely welcome news for fans of the the comic, the show, and of Taylor’s particular vision that’s been seen in the Crank films, Gamer, and most recently, Mom and Dad, the murderous parent movie starring Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair.
Since Taylor and Morrison have apparently had an inkling of where the story is headed after season 1, it will be interesting to see whether or not the finale differs in any significant way from the comic book, and if they tease what’s in store for season 2.
