The concept was actually based on a recurring nightmare the director, David Robert Mitchell, had. It was a nightmare of being stalked by a predator that would constantly just walk towards him.
The director himself said, "Yeah. Honestly, the basic idea, the main point of it, came from a recurring nightmare I had when I was a kid. In the nightmare, I was followed by a monster, and I instinctively knew it was bad." According to Mitchell, the sexual aspect of the monster and ing it on came later in his life. So it was a combination of inspiration from his childhood and adulthood.
