Starting in Harley Quinn #39, the titular hero is going back to the villain life. But Harley Quinn is only doing it to study some of the worst criminals in Gotham City. To ingratiate herself back into the Gotham Underground, Harley is once again donning her most famous attire, her classic jester costume.
Harley Quinn's Classic Costume Returns in New Arc
Harley Quinn was perfectly content staying in her own little corner of the DC Universe with her girlfriend Poison Ivy, but fate had other plans for her. Harley developed the power to breach other universes, something that made Lady Quark take notice and threaten Harley from ever doing so again. Harley tried to get to the bottom of things, but her life quickly spiraled out of control between teaching, getting involved in a murder mystery, and an AI clone monitoring and stalking Harley. However, Harley Quinn's taken all the chaos in stride, even as the multiverse shenanigans continued to pile up.
While Harley Quinn isn't legitimately going back to the life of a villain, it's still surprising to see. Harley has turned over a new leaf for the most part (even if she can't help but be a bit destructive). She's worked with the Bat-Family and various other heroes in the DC Universe. But she sounds determined to properly analyze Gotham's criminals. The real shock is seeing her wear her old jester outfit again. It's one thing to say she's becoming a villain again, but nothing telegraphs that better than the costume Harley Quinn wore when she was with Joker.
Harley Quinn Wants the World to Know She's a Villain Again
Harley Quinn moved away from her old costume as it served as a symbol of her time as the Joker's partner-in-crime. But after ditching the Joker and her old costume, Harley went on a path of growth that resulted in her becoming more heroic. If she wants people to believe she's backsliding into full-blown super-villainy, the best way to convince everyone is by wearing the suit associated with her time as a criminal. It may be just for show, but Harley Quinn is bringing back her classic look to convince the world she's gone bad.
Harley Quinn #39 is available on April 23rd from DC Comics.
