A new report reveals why the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie adaptation fell apart at Warner Bros. Ever since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 capped off the cinematic adaptation of J.K Rowling's novels in 2011, there has been tremendous interest in seeing the franchise's Golden Trio of Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) return to the silver screen. One way that could happen is a film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a stage play written by Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany set nineteen years after the events of The Deathly Hallows.

Now, a new report reveals that Warner Bros. once entertained the notion of adapting Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to the screen. According to Puck News, the studio had serious interest in adapting the two-part play into two movies, but Rowling and her representatives did not share their excitement. The Harry Potter author and her stage producers, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, were primarily concerned that a potential film adaptation would hurt the play's ticket sales on Broadway. In addition, not everyone at Warner Bros. ed the idea, as they felt a Cursed Child movie would suggest that Fantastic Beasts was a failure.

Can A Harry Potter And The Cursed Child Movie Still Happen?

Older Harry Potter Cast

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently expressed interest in new Harry Potter projects from Rowling, who is now a highly controversial figure due to her repeated transphobic comments. Still, Zaslav's recent comments have reignited hope that a Cursed Child movie could happen at the restructured studio. However, there are many factors that still render a Cursed Child movie less likely.

For starters, it's only been six years since the play premiered on Broadway, which isn't that long for a record-breaking and Tony Award-winning play like The Cursed Child. It's not uncommon for popular plays to run for well over a decade. Thus, Rowling and company are unlikely to waver from their original stance of a Cursed Child movie potentially taking away from the play.

Furthermore, if a Cursed Child movie has any hopes of happening and being well-received by Potterheads, it will need to feature the return of Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint. At the current time, this seems unlikely. Radcliffe said he might return for a Cursed Child movie in the distant future, but it's not something he's interested in doing right now. Watson is just as unlikely to return, as she is currently taking a break from acting and is reportedly not interested in working with Rowling due to her transphobic rhetoric. While there are multiple roadblocks in front of a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie adaptation, it's definitely something that fans and Warner Bros. wants to see happen.
