The flashback scenes, often heading back to well before the Boy Who Lived's story started. We see James and Lily Potter murdered by Lord Voldemort, take a trip down Lord Voldemort's memory lane and get to see various other moments to play out. However, with 4,224 pages worth of material, it was inevitable that not all of JK Rowling's work could make it onto the big screen.
There are many, often involving a Pensieve, that make for an interesting reading, helping to flesh out the wizarding world. Unfortunately, they didn't get a chance to be depicted in the movies.
The Trial Of Barty Crouch Jr
The Goblet of Fire movie shows Barty Crouch Jr getting arrested after Igor Karkaroff outs him as a Death Eater in front of the entire Winzengamot, including his strict father. David Tennant gives off an air of arrogance with his portrayal but this is different from how the character came across in his trial, which was seen by Albus Dumbledore and revisited by Harry in the book of the same name.
Here, Barty is a scared figure with the Dementors present feeding off his fear and anguish. He's petrified and left aghast when Barty Crouch Sr sends him to Azkaban, screaming as he's carried away. He's meant to rot behind bars but ends up escaping and serving Lord Voldemort once again.
Bertha Jorkins
The Potter books don't feature some characters - and Bertha Jorkins is one of them. She works at the Ministry of Magic and is known for being ditzy, eventually being captured by Voldemort before being tortured and killed. This is how the Dark Lord finds out about the Triwizard Tournament being held at Hogwarts, enabling him to put a plan into action.
Harry witnesses a memory from Dumbledore that shows him bemoaning her nosiness as a youngster, with Bertha moaning about being hexed by a girl called Florence. Her specter emerges from Lord Voldemort's wand during the duel at Little Hangleton, ing Lily, James, Cedric Diggory, and Frank Bryce in encouraging Harry amid his fight to survive.
Sitting The O.W.L's
When Severus Snape is occupied, Harry peers into the Pensieve and gets to see some of the Potions Master's memories unfold. Some of this is covered in the Order of the Phoenix but it's far more detailed in the source material, with the scene actually commencing while Snape and the Marauders are sitting in the Great Hall taking their O.W.L exams.
They all behave differently, with James and Sirius relaxed, Remus Lupin working hard, Peter Pettigrew looking anxious and Snape himself writing with his nose nearly pressed against the parchment. The Marauders proceed to bully the Slytherin student and Lily objects, leaving Harry to wonder how his parents ever ended up together when they were two completely different people.
The Prophecy
Harry and Dumbledore's conversation in the wake of Sirius Black's heartbreaking death doesn't last for very long in the fifth film, but it's far more interesting in the book. This way they get to learn who actually made the prophecy, something Warner Bros decided against including in the big-screen version of the story.
It's revealed that Sybill Trelawney had a seizure, similar to one she had in the Prisoner of Azkaban, and set the wheels in motion for what was to follow. This was overheard by Severus Snape, who then fled to relay the news to Voldemort. The Dark Lord could easily have chosen Neville Longbottom yet decided to go after the Potters instead.
Bob Ogden And The Gaunts
While fans got to see some of Lord Voldemort's past during the Half-Blood Prince movie, the book contains far more information on the matter. The very first flashback Harry and Dumbledore travel to belongs to Bob Ogden, who works at the Ministry of Magic. He then travels to arrest a man named Morfin Gaunt for using magic on a muggle.
Here, he has his work cut out. Morfin and his father Marvolo are both vile, bullying their sister and daughter Merope - who would one day go on to bring Voldemort into the world. She bewitches Tom Riddle Sr into falling in love with her before one day lifting the curse and being left alone as a result.
Morfin Recalls Tom Riddle Meeting
Morfin ends up being put in Azkaban for killing the Riddles in their family home. But Voldemort is the one responsible, something Dumbledore senses. He ends up visiting the loathsome character before his death and extracts a memory of him meeting the Dark Lord for the very first time.
He's shocked when his nephew uses Parseltongue and Morfin reveals the importance of his ring, a family heirloom. Voldemort then alters his relative's memory, taking the ring and killing his family before forcing Morfin to take the blame. He ends up dying in Azkaban after spending years jailed for a crime he didn't even commit.
Caractacus Burke Meeting Voldemort's Mother
Caractacus Burke is the co-owner of a Horcrux, concealing a piece of Voldemort's soul.
Burke gives up his memory, showing himself buying the locket from Merope after she leaves the Gaunts behind in desperate need of money with a baby on the way. He underpays her, being the cruel man that he is. Tom Riddle ends up taking it back himself after he starts working at the shop, which brings us to our next point...
Hokey And Hepzibah Smith
With Riddle possessing immense charm, he's sent to the house of a rich old lady named Hepzibah Smith to coerce her into giving up some prized possessions. He's after the locket, which he obtains while flattering her. And he then learns she also owns Helga Hufflepuff's cup, something he wants to turn into a Horcrux.
Dumbledore learns all this through a house-elf named Hokey who, like Morfin, is framed for a murder she didn't commit. While under control of the Imperius Curse, Hokey poisons Smith and is consequently charged for Manslaughter. She gives this story up shortly before her death and we're just grateful she wasn't put behind bars. However, it's unknown what happened to her career afterward.
The Interview
After leaving Knockturn Alley, Voldemort spends several years laying low. He then resurfaces to interview for the post of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher after previously being rejected by Armando Dippet but it's all merely a ruse to enable him to obtain Rowena Ravenclaw's lost Diadem and hide it inside the Room of Requirement, a place he wrongly thinks only he knows about.
Dumbledore and Voldemort have a civil but tense exchange and the job is jinxed from that moment on, with every teacher hired failing to last beyond a year. It even puts people off applying, which is why Hogwarts allows fraud Gilderoy Lockhart to teach at the school.
'Keep An Eye On Quirrell'
In the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 movie, Harry peers into Snape's memories with most details from the book included. However, it doesn't show an amusing observation from Dumbledore that takes place in the book.
The Hogwarts heaster, without even looking up, tells Snape to keep an eye on Quirinus Quirrell. This shows he wasn't totally oblivious to his colleague plotting away throughout the year and also shows just how amusing the character can be. Given how it was only a minor detail, it's understandable this was left out.
