Considering he's the main character of Harry Potter, Harry James Potter himself is a little controversial in the fandom. Some people love him as a beacon of light in the wizarding world, someone who eventually stepped up to his destiny as the Chosen One and saved it from doom. Others see him as a problematic figure who made some decisions that fans didn't agree with, and who often lost his temper when it was entirely unwarranted.
Still, no one can deny that Harry went through a lot, even though he had a lot of mixed moments with fans.
Felt Bad: His Entire Life With The Dursleys
It's hard not to feel absolutely terrible for a boy who was left with abusive family his whole childhood. Although Dumbledore claims this was necessary for his safety, he was bullied for years by his cousin, neglected by his aunt and uncle. He could have gotten stuck in a cycle of abuse, or come out of the home a far worse person due to what he'd endured.
Fortunately, Harry is a strong person who remained brave and comionate throughout it all.
Hated Him: Becoming An Auror
Harry's career choice of ing the Auror department had fans feeling like he missed the mark of the whole series. He spends most of the series rebelling against a corrupt governmental system that rules over its people with unfair demands and never has their best interests at heart and yet, in the end, he s the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
The Ministry is eventually revolutionized, apparently, by Hermione and Kingsley Shacklebolt mostly — but it isn't immediately done when Harry signs up.
Felt Bad: Not Being Able To Cope With His Fame
There are so many moments when Harry can't quite seem to cope with his fame. He's an awkward person who seems to be pretty introverted despite his outbursts, and he comes from a home where he's generally ignored or only given negative attention to having to deal with a lot of fame and pressure. Unlike many people, he doesn't enjoy this.
Hated Him: Smashing Dumbledore's Office
A moment that fans felt was totally uncalled for is when Harry smashes up the heaster's office. Grieving Sirius and unsure of where to take out his frustrations, he smashes Dumbledore's possessions, letting a year of anger bleed out. Dumbledore, despite the fact he is certainly capable enough to, makes absolutely no move to stop him, because he feels responsible for the way Harry feels.
Felt Bad: The Graveyard
The graveyard scene is perhaps the most horrific scene in the series for Harry. At only fourteen, he watches his classmate die in a way he feels is his own fault, before he's tied up and tortured, told all the while that he's about to be murdered. With an injured ankle, a slashed forearm, and suffering from the after-effects of the Cruciatus curse, he eventually manages to escape, but it's with the knowledge that Lord Voldemort has returned and will be hunting him down. This will not be the last of his pain.
Hated Him: Losing His Temper With Ron & Hermione
Harry has a habit of losing his temper, but it happens most during Order of the Phoenix.
He can't seem to help himself from shouting at his best friends when they're only trying to help. Later, it's revealed that Voldemort is edging his way into Harry's head and this is why he's shouting (as well as all he's been through!), but fans still resent him for this one.
Felt Bad: When Sirius Died
Harry shows real, raw agony when his godfather is murdered in front of him by Bellatrix Lestrange. Sirius is the closest thing he has to a parent, and really the best thing he has left of their memory. It's a heartbreaking moment and a real sign that his last parental figure is gone. He has Remus Lupin and Molly Weasley, but Sirius is his godfather, and the one he seems to have the biggest connection with.
Hated Him: Telling Albus He Wished He Wasn't His Son
Many fans like to regard Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as optional canon rather than Potterverse law, and some of it is because Harry acts in ways they don't approve of. In a fight with his son, Harry tells Albus he wishes Albus wasn't his son at all. For someone who grew up without parents and in an abusive home, this seems like a horrifically unforgivable thing to tell his middle child who is already feeling alone.
Felt Bad: Finding Out He Was A Horcrux
In Deathly Hallows, Harry finds out he is a Horcrux and must die for Voldemort to do the same.
In typical brave Harry fashion, he leaves the Pensieve where the memories are revealed and walks to the forest to allow Voldemort to kill him. He knows he's walking to his death, has no idea if it will be drawn out and painful, but he does it, with no knowledge that he will return. It may just be the saddest part of the whole series.
Hated Him: Using Sectumsempra On Malfoy
It's dangerous to use a Draco Malfoy is about to cast the torture curse on him. Sectumsempa cuts Malfoy like he's been hacked with a sword, leaving him bleeding on the ground, and it's only because of Severus Snape's intervention that he survives.
