“I’ll Have A Cappuccino.”

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1

While many of Hermione Granger’s most iconic quotes are ed for her knowledge of the Wizarding World or her tendency to remind her friends of just what the plan is, this particular line seems innocuous on its own. Hermione ordering a cappuccino might not seem particularly interesting, but she does it to fit into the Muggle world when she, Ron, and Harry unexpectedly go on the run and start their search for Voldemort's horcruxes much earlier than expected. She’s prepared with supplies for them, but she’s also the one most likely to help them blend in, by ordering a cappuccino from a bored waitress right before the group has to fight for their lives against a pair of wizards after Harry.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone

One of the first mysteries that Harry, Ron, and Hermione encounter when they become friends is just who Nicolas Flamel is and what he has to do with Hogwarts. It’s Hermione to the rescue as she says this line and thumps a truly impressive book down on the table in front of her friends. Both boys are stunned at her idea of “light reading,” but listen to her explanation for who Flamel is and why someone would be interested in going after him. This is one moment that cements Hermione as the researcher and the planner of the group.

“Me? Books And Cleverness. There Are More Important Things, Harry: Friendship And Bravery.”

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone

While Ron and Harry might initially be put off by Hermione’s know-it-all attitude, the duo come to be impressed by her capacity for knowledge. Harry voices that during their attempt to get to the Sorcerer’s Stone at the end of the first movie, and Hermione makes sure to tell him that there are more important things than being clever. She sees his capacity for friendship and bravery as even more important than her knowledge. Of course, over time, it’s made clear that both things are important as each member of the trio has important traits that allow them to balance one another out.

“What’s Got Your Wand In A Knot?”

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

Hermione looks concerned for Harry in Goblet of Fire.

There are not a lot of expressions in the Harry Potter movies that are very obviously wizard-isms. Much of the language of the movies, other than the Latin words for different spells and charms, is right in line with the language of the Muggle world. It makes the world of the movies even more immersive when characters use phrases like, “What’s got your wand in a knot” that wouldn’t be heard in everyday life. It’s interesting that it’s Hermione who picks up on them and uses them since she does spend part of her year with her Muggle parents and doesn’t live full-time in the Wizarding World until she’s an adult.

"Excuse Me, I Have To Go Vomit."

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

The Harry Potter books and movies spend seven years with the core characters. As a result, the kids at the center of the story become teenagers and then, adults. As they grow, they develop romantic interests in the stories, and for Hermione and Ron, that complicates their friendship - especially when Ron starts dating Lavender Brown. Hermione and Lavender are very different people, and it pains Hermione to see Ron bend over backward to please Lavender, even enduring pet names and jewelry from her that he dislikes. Her jealousy gets the better of her at a few points, and at one point, this quote from Hermione is said quietly to Harry so that no one else knows how hurt she is.

"If You're Going To Kill Harry, You'll Have To Kill Us, Too."

Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban

Ron Seated with Scabbers while Hermione and Harry stand next to him in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

This is one of Hermione Granger’s quotes that is seen as her most brave. She says it to Sirius Black when she still believes that he’s the one responsible for betraying Harry’s parents to Voldemort, and even stands between him and Harry. The trouble is that this great line doesn’t originally belong to Hermione. It’s actually Ron’s line in the book, and he says it while hobbling on an injured leg. Many of Ron’s most memorable lines in the Harry Potter novels ended up being given to Hermione in the movies to make her a more sympathetic character for the audience. Hermione of the movies is much quicker to jump into action than Hermione of the books.

"I'm Not An Owl!"

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

Harry, Ron, and Hermione are the closest friends by their fourth year at Hogwarts. They’ve faced countless dangers together. When the closest of friends have a falling out, however, things can get very tricky. Hermione ends up caught in the middle of Ron and Harry's argument in Goblet of Fire. Though she spends time with each of them, she also ends up having to messages back and forth between them when they refuse to speak to one another. She gets so fed up with their arguing that she yells at Harry so that he won’t have her a message back to Ron. It’s a great moment for Hermione because she’s always been outspoken with her friends before, but when they begin to argue, she becomes much more careful around them. Her, “I’m not an owl” gets her back to her old self.

“Is That Really What My Hair Looks Like From The Back?”

Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban

Hermione is usually level-headed and logical, so the moments that allow her to break from that humanize her a bit in the movies. In Prisoner of Azkaban, when Hermione and Harry travel back in time just a few hours to save Buckbeak and Sirius, Hermione provides Harry with rapid-fire explanations and is initially very careful of the rules of using a time turner. It’s only when she actually is able to see herself and Harry that she takes a moment to question her appearance. While some might see it as out of character from her usual logical demeanor, she’s allowed a moment of curiosity about how others see her.

“For The Record, I've Always Found Him Interesting."

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince sees Hermione and Ron often at odds because of Ron’s relationship with Lavender. When Ron ends up in the hospital wing after eating poisoned chocolates meant for Harry, however, Hermione is instantly by his side - and criticized by Lavender for being there for someone she cares about. Lavender accuses Hermione of only being there because Ron is now “interesting” since he’s recovering, which Hermione balks at. She doesn’t understand Lavender’s shallow approach to her relationship with Ron, and it infuriates her enough to it her interest in Rob in a roundabout way.

"Everyone, this is Loony... Luna Lovegood."

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

Hermione is someone who is often picked on and called names by other students because of her focus on school work and her tendency to share her knowledge without being prompted. As a result, it’s surprising that she would in on making fun of anyone, even if inadvertently. She knows that other students call Luna Lovegood “Loony” because of her eccentric beliefs, and while Hermione and Luna butt heads because of their different opinions, they do become friends. Hermione’s slip of the tongue here, however, is unfortunate, because it demonstrates that she is more like the other students when it comes to judging those different from her than she might want to it.
