It's been over two years since Jam City released the Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery game and it has since accrued a cult following among the public. It may not be as popular as the games on the PlayStation since it's not focused on the original main characters but it does manage to hold its own with its compelling storylines.
The game also allows players to explore the halls of Hogwarts and to form friendships with other non-player characters. However, before people dismiss the RPG altogether, they might want to know a few things about it. Here are the 10 most important questions gamers may have...
What Is The Plot About?
Since the word "mystery" is included in the title, people would be curious as to what this could be. After the player has customized their avatar and chosen their wands, they will learn that their brother, Jacob, had previously been expelled for attempting to open the "Cursed Vaults."
However, the player soon learns their brother had disappeared not long after and had unleashed a curse in Hogwarts. With your friends at your side, you all decide to investigate why Jacob disappeared and why he was obsessed with the vaults.
Any Known Characters?
Since the game begins just after Voldemort's attack on the Potters, it was safe to say he and his friends wouldn't be making an appearance in the game. However, the game isn't solely populated by non-canon characters. You will be able to see a few memorable faces, including Hagrid, Snape, Dumbledore, Professor Flitwick, Professor McGonagall, and Dobby.
Furthermore, players will be delighted to know that they will have the opportunity to become close friends with Bill and Charlie Weasley as well as Tonks. They will all be important allies in the player's quests.
Is There Any Romance?
Many people have wondered whether players would be able to date other characters during their time at Hogwarts. The answer? Sort of. While romance isn't a part of the main storyline as of yet, the developers have started providing side quests that allow you to date one of six characters.
This option usually comes in around Year 4, where you're will be allowed to take someone to the "Celestial Ball." Players will also be able to go on a date with one of their friends in the "First Date" quest. In the event of annual holidays, such as Valentine's Day, there are often side quests, too.
Can You Play Quidditch?
One welcome element to the game is that yes, players can play Quidditch. Once a player completes Year 2, Chapter 6, they will be allowed to their house's Quidditch team. This will grant gamers access to the stadium and see them try out a variety of positions.
To help your team win the game, you will have to perform several successful maneuvers. Most of the time, it is usually out of three rounds. If you manage to complete all the friendly games, you will be able to play in the Quidditch Cup match. However, gamers have to keep their eyes peeled as this can be a limited-time offer.
Can You Attend Classes?
Yes, the players are able to go to classes with their friends. In fact, it is important to know that these classes are vital to the story's progression.
To move on to the next chapter, you will have to attend classes frequently in order to improve your knowledge and spells. It's also worth noting that players will have to attend the same class a couple of times if they have not collected enough stars or the timer has run out. If you don't get the minimum requirement, you can lose house points.
Can You Have Pets?
Some may be surprised to learn that players can also collect several pets, which come with their own bonuses. In the first year, fans could only choose a cat, owl, or rat. But more options become available as the game progresses — including a dog, spider, and a bat.
Since the game also relies heavily on "energy" orbs, gamers would be glad to learn that tapping and awakening their pets would reward them with more. You will be able to alter the colors of some of your pets, too.
What Mini-Games Are There?
While gamers are waiting for the energy bar to be refilled, they can play several mini-games to the time. Since friendship is an integral part of the game, players will have to participate in some mini-games to improve their relationship. This can either be over a meal, drinking Butterbeer, or playing Gobstones.
Gamers can also participate in the Duelling Club and play in a couple of Quidditch games. All these events can earn players several rewards, including diamonds, books, and energy orbs.
Are There Side Missions?
Although people who the game today might not run into this problem for a while, it is important to know the main storyline is still a work in progress. But the developers won't leave players waiting for the next update empty-handed as they make sure there are plenty of side missions to complete.
While most of the side quests are time-limited, all of them provide a reward of some kind. This could be diamonds, energy orbs, coins, outfits, and even new characters for you to bond with.
Do You Have To Pay For Elements Of The Game?
Like many online interactive games out today, developers have included microtransactions in the game. Often, these micropayments provide players with more goods that help them to finish lessons or quests quicker. One can pay for more energy orbs, diamonds, or books (which will allow one to buy pets).
However, it is important to note that these options are not necessary if you have the patience to wait for the energy bar to refill and keep a close eye on the time. Developers also allow gamers to attain free orbs and diamonds through ments or in hidden details.
Do You Need To Be An Avid Harry Potter Fan To Play?
Some may wonder if they have to be an avid fan of the Harry Potter franchise to play the game. The answer: not really. However, players will have to brush up on the names of all the professors and the subjects they teach as questions relating to their lives are included in the game.
It is also important to take note of the names of all the spells the characters learn and their functions, as there are questions about these too. Other than that, the game is fairly simple and easy to understand for Harry Potter fans and newcomers alike.
