In the Harry Potter world, there are many fascinating magical creatures. While some of them come from classic mythology and fairy tales, others are iconic creations of J.K. Rowling. While fans of the series know all about creatures like dementors, hippogriffs, and dragons, there are many other magical creatures from the wizarding world that a lot of fans have never heard of.
In the book Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Rowling lists out dozens of magical creatures and not all of them are mentioned in the original series or in any of the movies.
Quintaped
This is a rather terrifying creature that is also called a Hairy MacBoon. This animal was quite dangerous and had a taste for human flesh.
The quintaped looked similar to a spider in some ways except it had five legs instead of eight and each leg ended with a clubfoot. It gets its nickname because of the fact that it’s covered in thick hair that’s usually a reddish-brown color. They were said to mostly be found in the northernmost area of Scotland.
Snidget
The snidget is a creature that some of the more dedicated fans might know about, but it’s not really mentioned much in the books or films. This animal is rather adorable, but it was used for a really cruel purpose in wizarding history.
It was a small, golden bird with rotating wings that was used in the early days of Quidditch for the Seeker to catch. This is what the Golden Snitch was based on, but now the enchanted ball is used instead of the poor snidget.
Fwooper
The fwooper is a creature that is featured in Fantastic Beasts, but you might have missed it and especially its name.
This animal is a magical bird from Africa that is brightly colored in neon colors like pink, yellow, and green. They have a high-pitched song that can drive people mad if they don’t have a silencing charm placed on them. The Fwooper was carried to New York City in Newt Scamander’s briefcase.
Bundimun
The bundimun is a weird creature that can be found across the wizarding world that looks more like a fungus or parasite than anything else. It’s a green color and considered a pest.
While it does eat dirt, the bundimun is known for being able to destroy a house as they are acidic and can cause buildings to rout. They even can ooze out acid when they are annoyed or threatened. Mostly, they are a pest that is found in dirty places, and you can tell they are around because they smell like decay.
Billywig
The billywig is another magical creature that’s some sort of insect. This bug-like animal is from Australia and is easy to spot because of its sapphire blue color.
The billywig can be briefly seen in the Fantastic Beasts movie, but it doesn’t play a large role. What makes this creature interesting is that they have wings on the top of their head that allow them to fly in a way similar to a helicopter. They also have a long stinger and the impacts include being able to levitate after being stung.
Ashwinder
The ashwinder is another magical creature that Newt Scamander discovered on his travels and wrote about in the book version. This creature is a magical snake that is created by the remains of magical fire that wasn’t put out and was allowed to burn. This serpent is rather thin and is a light grey color, but it also has rather creepy red, glowing eyes. However, the Ashwinder only lives for an hour giving it just enough time to lay eggs.
Lethifold
The lethifold is one of the weirdest and scariest creatures in the Harry Potter world because it’s less of a creature and more of a magical entity. This thing is found in tropical areas and looks like a black cloak. It seems similar in some ways to a dementor, but it’s known to actually devour people instead of just sucking out their happiness and souls like dementors do.
Plimpy
The plimpy is a type of fish that is ball-shaped but has long webbed feet. It uses these feet to walk around the bottom of places like lakes. Because of its round shape and long, skinny legs, it’s definitely one of the weird-looking magical creatures. The plimpy isn’t dangerous, but merpeople consider it to be a pest. There are likely some in the Hogwarts lake.
Knarl
The gnarl is another of the cuter magical creatures that can be found in the wizarding world as it looks almost the same as a hedgehog. What makes this animal even more adorable is that it mainly eats wild daisies. The only real difference between a gnarl and a hedgehog is that if you leave food out for a knarl it will see this as a trap and attempt to ruin the garden of the person who left out the food.
Moke
The moke is a lizard that has silvery green skin and can get up to about ten inches long. This reptile can be found in the British Isles, but Muggles don’t see it because it can shrink itself at will. While they are rather adorable, the moke has a rather sad fate as it is prized for its skin. Many people in the wizarding world use the moke's skin to make purses and wallets because the skin can also shrink when a stranger gets close to it. This keeps the money safe as only the owner can open it. Harry Potter was actually given one of these as a gift from Hagrid when he turned 17.
