Although the characters that make up the majority of the stories within the wizarding world of Harry Potter are actual wizards or witches, there are the occasional human characters that make an appearance. These human characters, referred to in the series as "muggles" or "no-majes," are as varied as the rest of the cast of characters.

While it seems like the majority of muggles within the story are not the best that the human race has to offer, they're all different people with different ideals and motivations. So out of all of the muggle characters within the Harry Potter fictional universe, who is the least or most likable?

Mary Lou Barebone

The entire Harry Potter world is unfortunately populated with a variety of extremely off putting muggles, but none of them can compete with someone like Mary Lou Barebone.

Mary Lou is one of the few muggles in the world who actually sincerely believes in magic, and she has made it her life's mission to rid the world of it. Her fanaticism is terrifying, but they way that she abuses her children makes her unforgivable.

Vernon Dursley

Vernon Cropped

One of J.K. Rowling's favorite plot devices within the wizarding world seems to be abusive parents. Although Vernon Dursley wasn't quite as horrifying as Mary Lou, he still neglected and abused Harry Potter and was a hater of all things magical.

But what could make it better or worse is that even though he was awful to Harry, he was very kind and generous to his own son, so he was at least capable of caring for others in some way.

Petunia Dursley

Petunia Cropped

It's no surprise that Vernon and Petunia wound up together, because they were truly two peas in a pod. They both seemed to take great delight in spoiling their son rotten and treating their nephew like a burden.

She comes out slightly ahead of her husband though, because despite being a genuinely awful person, it was eventually revealed that she did have a shred of caring and concern for her nephew.

Tobias Snape

snape

In yet another instance of a muggle parent who abuses their magically gifted child, there is Tobias Snape. Although the elder Snape was omitted from the films, in the novels Harry got a peek into Severus' subconscious and saw that his father had been abusive to him and his mother.

It appeared that he was very neglectful of Severus as well, and once the half-blood Prince made it to Hogwarts he never looked back.

Marjorie Dursley

Marge Dursley

Obviously Aunt Marge rates above many of the other muggles in the Harry Potter world because she didn't have the opportunity to abuse any of the characters in the story, but it seems likely that she would have if she had gotten the chance.

I mean, Harry Potter grew up under the torment of the Dursleys, and he couldn't even handle one night with Aunt Marge before inflating her like a balloon.

Dudley Dursley

Like both of his parents, Dudley Dursley was a selfish, insecure bully who took great delight in hurting other people and who thought only of satisfying his own impulsive wants.

But he does get a little bit of credit just because he was a child when all of these things happened, and because he did eventually come to realize that he cared for the cousin that he too such great glee in torturing.

Tom Riddle Sr.

The elder Tom Riddle is still an incredibly unappealing and unkind person as far as the general populace goes, but in the world of Harry Potter, muggles are, for the most part, the actual worst.

And while Tom can be forgiven for abandoning his wife and son (since the relationship was magically coerced anyway), that doesn't excuse his extremely rude and snobby behavior towards others.

Arabella Figg

Technically, Arabella Figg is a squib, but she lives in the muggle world and has muggle abilities, so she still counts as a muggle. Mrs. Figg forced Harry to endure hours of boredom when she babysat him, but that was only so the Dursleys wouldn't think he had too much fun.

And of course, she ultimately did a lot to help Harry and help the wizarding world in general, and she seemed to be a very nice lady.

Mr. & Mrs. Granger

the grangers

Although the Grangers did not get an enormous amount of screen time, this duo of dentists appear to have raised one of the most exceptional witches in history, and they were enormously proud of their daughter.

Unlike many muggles, the Grangers fully embraced the world of magic and were glad to see Hermione come into her own and use her abilities to the fullest.

Jacob Kowalski

Fully formed muggle characters are somewhat of a rarity in the world of Harry Potter, and clearly the few muggles that do make an appearance are characters that are usually somewhere between mediocre and downright repulsive.

But Jacob Kowalski is everything that a muggle should be. He's kind, caring, brave, considerate, and enjoys the magical world just as much as the Harry Potter audience does.
