After just one meeting, Marvel Studios cast Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop for Kate Bishop to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She's been a fan-favorite character in the comics since she debuted in 2005 as part of the Young Avengers, and that put some pressure on Marvel Studios to find the perfect actress to play the archer. Now, Assembled: The Making of Hawkeye has provided more details on Kate's casting.
Following Hawkeye's announcement, who would play Kate Bishop became one of the biggest questions about the series. Hailee Steinfeld ultimately landed the coveted role and made her MCU as Kate in Hawkeye in late 2021. Just like the comics, she quickly found a fanbase within the MCU. Steinfeld helped ensure Kate Bishop was one of the best new MCU characters introduced in 2021 as audiences watched her journey to become the universe's next Hawkeye. It's safe to say that Marvel Studios once again nailed a casting decision, and it seems they knew it right away.
In addition to Disney+ providing Marvel Studios with a new avenue to tell stories set in the MCU, the streaming service has also brought a new series of behind-the-scenes documentaries. The Assembled series continues with an episode dedicated to Hawkeye and all of the different aspects of the show's development and production. This included Executive Producer Trinh Tran discussing her hope to bring Kate into Clint's story. However, she revealed that Hailee Steinfeld was cast in Hawkeye after just one meeting with Kevin Feige, as the Marvel Studios president offered her the role on the spot.
"I think in the back of Kevin’s mind, he had Hailee as Kate. We actually just said 'Let’s meet Hailee, let’s just have a conversation with her and see how that goes.' And I after the conversation Kevin just offered her the role right then and there. So that was pretty remarkable that we came out of that meeting shaking her hand and going, 'Okay you’re in. You’re gonna play Kate Bishop.'"
The first report of Hailee Steinfeld playing Kate Bishop came in September 2019, when she was said to be in early talks for the role. This could be around the time that Feige and Steinfeld came to some understanding that she'd Hawkeye's cast. However, it remained unclear for months whether or not she was actually going to play her. Steinfeld's involvement with Apple TV+'s Dickinson reportedly caused issues, which even led to reports that she was not in the running for the role by summer 2020. It wasn't until Hawkeye started filming in December 2020 that Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop casting was confirmed as she was spotted on set with Jeremy Renner.
It's quite clear that Kevin Feige (and presumably casting director Sarah Finn) made the right decision in pinpointing Hailee Steinfeld as the MCU's Kate Bishop. She has the perfect energy and comedic timing to play the archer in Hawkeye and the MCU for years to come. Steinfeld even itted in Assembled: The Making of Hawkeye that she wasn't too familiar with Kate Bishop before getting the role, which is a further testament to how well she played Kate in a way that is fresh and still someone comic fans will recognize. Now fans just have to wait and see what MCU projects Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop appears in next after Hawkeye.
