A Led by Iron Man and Captain America, the MCU's greatest heroes worked together on numerous occasions to save the world. However, if hints in Hawkeye are to be believed, the iconic Avengers line-up could be set for a revamp.
One of Marvel Studios' points of emphasis at the start of Phase 4 is to expand the number of superteams that could exist in the MCU's near future. Several characters associated with the Young Avengers have been introduced, including Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) in Hawkeye. There have also been teases for the Thunderbolts or Dark Avengers, depending on which team Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is forming. Fans have also not missed the rise of Midnight Sons characters or how Black Knight (Kit Harington) and Blade (Mahershala Ali) being part of MI13. There has also been speculation that the Champions, Illuminati, Agents of Atlas, or Ultimates could form before too long as well.
There is also another superteam that the MCU could be setting up, the West Coast Avengers. Audiences have started to theorize that the Avengers spinoff team might be on the way following different Phase 4 events. Hawkeye is now the latest property to tease that the West Coast Avengers could form soon thanks to a subtle Easter egg that hints at the team's origin.
West Coast Avengers' Comic History Explained
The West Coast Avengers became part of Marvel's comic canon in 1984 when Roger Stern and Bob Hall created West Coast Avengers #1. The spinoff saw Hawkeye take on a leadership role and start a second Avengers team following a suggestion by Vision. Hawkeye recruited Mockingbird, Wonder Man, Tigra, and James Rhodes as Iron Man to be the other of the first West Coast Avengers team. These heroes united to fight several different villains before the roster expanded to include Hank Pym's Ant-Man and Moon Knight. The team went on to encounter major villains like Ultron and smaller ones like Grim Reaper and Graviton. However, Captain America eventually disbanded the West Coast Avengers due to their lack of teamwork and constant fighting that escalated following Mockingbird's death.
This wasn't the last time Marvel used the West Coast Avengers, though. In a potentially significant move for where the MCU is heading, Clint Barton and Kate Bishop were responsible for reviving the West Coast Avengers in 2018. This version of the team included America Chavez and Kate's boyfriend Fuse, as well as Gwenpool and Kid Omega. They battled MODOK and Madame Masque early on. Considering Hawkeye is telling the beginning of Clint and Kate's relationship and America Chavez is debuting in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU and Kevin Feige could be inclined to take inspiration from this version of the team when its time for the West Coast Avengers to form.
Phase 4 Teases West Coast Avengers With White Vision & US Agent
Phase 4 has already introduced a few different characters associated with the West Coast Avengers, though. White Vision's MCU future ambiguous, as he was last seen flying into the sky with a head full of memories. There is a chance that Marvel Studios partially decided to introduce White Vision now because their sights are on bringing the West Coast Avengers together.
The MCU could also have plans to use John Walker with the West Coast Avengers. The "evil Captain America" was introduced in US Agent's MCU future appears to be tied to Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, she could pull some strings to make him part of the West Coast Avengers whenever they form.
How Hawkeye Sets Up West Coast Avengers
Hawkeye continued the MCU's West Coast Avengers teases during its second episode. The story includes Clint and Kate heading to her aunt's apartment to use it as a hideout from the Tracksuit Mafia. When they arrive at the building, Kate looks through the list of residents before finding her aunt's name: Moira Brandon. She isn't Kate's relative in the comics, but Moira Brandon does have a connection to the West Coast Avengers. Hawkeye's clever Easter egg is portrayed in the source material as an older actress looking to sell her estate. Her mansion becomes the base of operation for the West Coast Avengers after Hawkeye and Mockingbird meet with her. Moira later became an honorary member for saving a few .
Although Hawkeye has already changed parts of Moira Brandon's comic story, she is meant to be an Easter egg for West Coast Avengers aficionados. Hawkeye episode 2 doesn't show Moira, but her backstory as an actress is alluded to through movie posters with her name on them featured in her apartment. While the MCU's Moira has a New York apartment that certainly couldn't be the base of operation for the West Coast Avengers, her successful acting career leaves the door open for that connection to be made. Since Moira isn't in New York during Hawkeye, she may be at her house in the west. This second home could then be a place for the MCU's West Coast Avengers to set up shop, or Moira could help the team find a base separately from her property.
What Role The West Coast Avengers Can Play In Phase 4
The West Coast Avengers could be precisely the type of superteam that emerges in MCU Phase 4. Ant-Man, Wasp, Shang-Chi, War Machine, and other such heroes can also work closer to home.
Marvel Studios hasn't made anything official about the West Coast Avengers' MCU future, but Hawkeye's early tease to their comic story is exciting nonetheless. It could mean audiences aren't too far away from seeing the team fight together. In addition to the established MCU characters West Coast Avengers could bring together for a crossover, the team also presents Marvel with an opportunity to introduce other new heroes. Mockingbird, Wonder Man, Tigra, Firebird, and the original Human Torch are just a few of the characters who could the MCU as West Coast Avengers . Now it is up to Marvel Studios to bring the team together after these multiple Phase 4 teases and incorporate them into the wider MCU plan.
