Summary

  • The two-season Starz wrestling drama Heels is coming to Netflix in the U.S. after ending in 2023.
  • Netflix has announced that the show will arrive on the platform on September 15.
  • If the show becomes a Netflix hit, season 3 could be a possibility.

The two-season sports drama Heels season 3 did not come to fruition, as the show was cancelled by Starz in late September 2023, just a week and a half after the season 2 finale aired.

On X, Netflix made the official announcement of when Heels would begin streaming on the platform in the United States. Check out their post below:

Over a photo of Ludwig and Amell in costume, the post reads "Ding ding ding!" and announces that both seasons will come to the U.S. region on the platform on September 15. That date marks exactly one year to the day since the season 2 finale originally aired on Starz.

Could Netflix Help Heels Season 3 Happen?

Netflix Has Brought Back Cancelled Series Before

Heels may have a chance to reach a wider audience on Netflix, which in turn could potentially help it get renewed for season 3. The streaming platform is no stranger to bringing shows back from the brink of cancellation, as its library includes quite a few shows that were picked up from other networks, including Manifest, Lucifer, and You. In fact, the latter show only ran for one season on Lifetime and has now run for three on Netflix with its fourth and final on the way, showcasing how Netflix's broad audience base may have offered it stronger longevity.

You, starring Penn Badgley, is based on the stalker-thriller novel series of the same name by Caroline Kepnes.

Netflix has also been building a relationship with Heels star Stephen Amell since the show's end. Amell recently reprised the role of Garrett in the subversive superhero sequel Code 8: Part II, which debuted on the platform earlier in 2024. This could mean that the channels of communication are open to swiftly get the star on board for a new season of the show. However, his commitment to the Suits spinoff Suits: L.A. may prevent him from being available for a possible new season should it be swiftly renewed.

Additionally, the fact that Heels is only dropping in the U.S. on September 15 speaks to the fact that Netflix likely only has a limited distribution contract for the show. This likely means that, for them to manage licensing for a new season or a spinoff, there might be too much red tape to make it seem like a worthwhile financial prospect. While the show gaining momentum on the platform could very well pique the interest of Starz and get them to greenlight a new season, that is a less promising prospect.

Heels is a sports-drama series that tells the story of the men and women in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals, Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) and Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig), war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the hero (Ludwig) and someone the heel (Amell). Sometimes, however, it can be hard to disconnect from a character - leading to real-world consequences.
