One of the first trailers shown during The Game Awards 2021 was Ninja Theory announced the eagerly-anticipated Hellblade sequel during The Game Awards in 2019. Since then, few details about the project have surfaced.
The first title hit PC and PS4 in the summer of 2017, then migrated to Xbox a few months thereafter in the spring of 2018. Notably, Hellblade placed players in the role of Senua, an 8th Century Celtic warrior who battles her inner demons while embarking on a quest to save her lover's soul from Hela. Mental illness rested at the center of the story and core gameplay loop, with Senua regularly finding herself drowning in anxiety, doubt, and guilt, all while an incredible audio mix lured players deeper into the immersive action-adventure. The sequel seems as though it won't shy away from these topics, either.
Early during The Game Awards ceremony, Ninja Theory unveiled a brand-new glimpse at Senua's Saga: Hellblade II. Geoff Keighley noted at the end of the reveal that the footage wasn't merely in-engine cinematic. Everything shown on-screen was pure gameplay. And it looks absolutely incredible. Might this be the most impressive next-gen title we've seen to date? Viewers can judge that for themselves in the video linked below:
One bit of information that Ninja Theory and Xbox are still keeping close to their chests is the release date. At no point during the above trailer does a due date receive mention. And the previously hinted 2022 release window remains under wraps as well. Fortunately, it seems as though the project is coming along nicely.
The Senua-starring series doesn't count as the only titles that have kept Ninja Theory occupied in recent years. The studio released Bleeding Edge in early 2020, offering PC and Xbox players a MOBA experience replete with action-packed brawler gameplay. While Bleeding Edge failed to move the needle, it allowed Ninja Theory to stretch its wings a bit and probably provided the team with a breath of fresh air given the subject matter of Hellblade. With that in mind, who knows for sure what the group may have up its sleeve once production on Hellblade 2 comes to an end.
Senua's Saga: Hellblade II is expected to hit PC and Xbox platforms sometime in 2022.
