Summary

  • Helldivers 2 has friendly fire always on, and plenty of the game's weapons have enough firepower to make accidentally killing teammates very easy.
  • Not even small arms fire will keep teammates safe, as inadvertently walking in front of a teammate shooting, or bouncing a grenade off of an enemy can result in a team kill.
  • The easiest ways to accidentally kill teammates, though, are from some of the game's more unpredictable Stratagems.

One of the challenging and unique features of Helldivers 2 is that friendly fire is always on in the game, with no possibility of it being turned off. This means that teams will need to have good communication, trust, and aim in order to not inadvertently blow themselves up, but there will still be many accidents that are all but guaranteed to occur. In fact, many of the most useful Stratagems for defeating enemies are also the easiest for a player to accidentally take down their teammates, and sometimes even themselves.

For the right group, and in cases where they are truly accidental, these friendly fire mishaps can become hilarious stories and funny videos to post online. Unfortunately, when they happen a bit too often, the humor can quickly fade, leading to more disappointment and frustration than would otherwise be expected. While anything can cause a teammate's accidental demise, here are some of the easiest ways of unexpectedly creating friendly fire in Helldivers 2.

Helldivers 2 is just about the best-case scenario for a live-service game, and its show-stopping gameplay delivers incredibly visceral moments.

10 Simply Shooting & A Teammate Runs In Front

Never Run In Front Of A Loaded Gun

Naturally, any video game that has this much fast-paced warfare can create situations where someone may simply run in front of someone firing a weapon inadvertently. This can be the fault of the player shooting the gun if they are firing randomly while teammates may be maneuvering in front of them, or it can also be blamed on the victim for not watching out for what was going on around them. Often, it is simply a true accident that is incredibly easy to do in a game like Helldivers 2.

9 Bouncing Grenades Make For A Deadly Game Of Hot Potato

They Can Bounce Back To The Player Too

Grenades and grenade launchers are classic and fun ways to take out foes, but there is a reason the classic children's game of Hot Potato came to be. Unlike a straightforward bullet, most of the time a fired grenade will bounce at least once. The bouncing bomb can easily come right back to the one who shot it or may find its way into the face of a teammate who will likely not be appreciative. In the right circumstances, and with understanding friends, it can result in a rather hilarious story, however.

8 Air-Dropped Anti-Personnel Mines Create A Minefield Of Danger

Blinking Lights Aren't Always Noticeable

A sneaky strategy in Helldivers 2 is being able to place traps for enemies to run across, such as the Anti-Personnel Minefield. Using this Stratagem from the Engineering Bay Ship Module, a large area can be covered with small mines that explode when anything gets too close to them. While there are very small blinking red lights on the mines, they are not easily spotted, which is what makes them useful against enemies but also dangerous for teammates.

Stratagems are special abilities in Helldivers 2 you can unlock from your Destroyer ship to provide the best for your team during missions.

7 Resupply Pods Can Deliver Killing Blows

Watch For Falling Objects

One of the more humorous ways to die in Helldivers 2, which is also a trophy when timed correctly on an unsuspecting Charger, isn't even done with a weapon. Calling in a resupply will result in a Super Destroyer airdropping a package that contains ammo and other supplies, and a player selects an area on the ground where they want it to arrive, but then there is a short wait before it is dropped. If a teammate or enemy happens to step into the spot where that supply pod lands, they can become squished by the falling object.

6 A Mortar Sentry Can Hit Unsuspecting Teammates

The Mortar Sentry Can Also Be Struck By Friendly Fire

A Mortar Sentry turret can be a useful Stratagem against enemies that are behind a wall or other sorts of cover as it shoots powerful shells in an arc at a long range. Any teammates who may have found themselves a bit too close to the enemies are not protected from the attacks, however, and can find themselves falling victim to a friend's turret. Also, when placed in an area where there is a lot of gunfire, or where teammates may have become fed up with it, the Mortar Sentry is also susceptible to friendly fire.

5 The Eagle 500KG Bomb Requires Teammates To Avoid The Area

A True Test Of Good Communication

The Eagle 500KG Bomb is the most powerful explosive in Helldivers 2 (not counting the objective-specific Hellbomb) and covers a fairly large radius. Its description states that it can obliterate almost any target, even Helldivers 2's toughest enemies, and it has a very fast call-in time accompanying that high damage. Once the bomb hits the ground, nobody, friend or foe, will have time to get out of its way. Clear communication with teammates needs to happen well in advance of calling in this bomb or else many friendly casualties could occur.

4 Guard Dog Rover Turning Around

The Laser Keeps Right On Firing As It Spins

The Rover is a very useful drone turret for taking out enemies, but it can indiscriminately take out everyone when it decides to turn. With its unlimited ammo, it continues to shoot its laser when it spins around, and anyone in its line of fire can become a victim, whether friend or foe. It will even kill the person who is using it if they are in the way when it swings around.

3 Orbital Gas Strikes Can Go Around Barriers As Well

Hidden Teammates Could Fall Victim

A Helldivers 2 player fleeing a bombardment of organic material.

Using an Orbital Gas Strike requires a bit of coordination with teammates, because if an ally thinks they can simply take cover, they will be sadly mistaken. This cloud of corrosive gas that spreads out upon impact will cover an area, even behind walls. The gas will reach a large area and is harmful to both organic and robotic lifeforms, although it does not damage buildings.

2 Eagle Cluster Bomb Will Take Out Anyone In Its Radius

Medium Radius Air Strike

Helldivers 2 Eagle Cluster Bomb Hangar Stratagem with description, traits, and stats

The Eagle Cluster Bomb is a fantastic Eagle Stratagem for dealing with large groups of enemies, but if a teammate happens to enter the area it is dropping, they will not survive. Using this will call in a targeted air strike instantly and, although it does not destroy buildings and is weaker against heavy armor, it is very effective against people. Covering a medium-range area, this Stratagem is best used when players can communicate well with their teams before using the attack to make sure their friends are out of the area.

1 Orbital 380MM HE Barrage Is Not For Beginners

Its Large Blast Radius Makes It Difficult Not To Strike Friends

Helldivers 2 Orbital Stratagem being used to create explosions around Terminid enemies

Although it can be incredibly effective at taking out swarms of enemies, the Orbital Stratagem known as Orbital 380MM HE Barrage is almost guaranteed to provide chances of friendly fire damage. The blast zone for it is immense, with the strikes landing in a somewhat erratic fashion, which is helpful when it is enemies but much less so when a teammate is in the vicinity. If a player isn't very careful, the Orbital 380MM HE Barrage is the easiest way to wipe out the entire team of allies in Helldivers 2.
