Hit Arrowhead Game Studios video game best co-op shooter games on the market, released in 2024.
At Sony's CES 2025 press conference (via Geoff Keighley), Asid Quizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, announced a Helldivers movie in development. Quizilbash stated: "Looking ahead as to what might come next, I'm excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2." Check out Keighley's post below:
What To Expect From The Helldivers Movie
Fans Could Get The Ultimate Video Game Adaptation
Not much else is known at this point, except that the planned movie will be a production between PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures. While the announcement confirmed the movie will adapt Helldivers 2, there is a very good chance the film will combine elements from both games, taking the strongest parts of each to make the best possible movie. Video games have proven notoriously difficult to adapt in past years, with deviation from the source material a frequent point of criticism.
However, the success of recent projects such as The Last Of Us and The Super Mario Bros. Movie has renewed interest in video game adapations, and the popularity of Helldivers 2 means there could well be a strong audience for this movie. Many replies to Keighley's post have noted similarities between Helldivers 2 and Starship Troopers, the 1997 Paul Verhoeven sci-fi cult classic which has been cited as a huge influence on the game. That film could provide a path to shaping this story for the big screen.
Our Verdict On The Helldivers Movie
The Film Will Have To Respect Its Source Material
Video games are often popular because of their story, style, or action sequences, and a shoot-em-up like Helldivers could be challenging to adapt for the big screen in a satisfactory way. The critical and commercial failure of 2005's Doom movie adaptation, another game in a similar style, shows how tough this can be.
In addition to negative scores from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, 2005's Doom was a box office bomb, failing to earn more than its reported budget at the worldwide box office.
But technology and special effects have come a long way since then. As long as filmmakers strike the balance between respecting the game's audience and creating a cinematic experience, Helldivers has the chance to translate into a new medium effectively.
