The ancestry of many of the students who attend The School For Good And Evil cast and their parentage, it is unclear from this scene alone in the movie.
The ambiguity surrounding Hester’s (Freya Theodora Parks) mother’s identity in Netflix’s The School For Good And Evil differs from the books, where she does directly hail from a fairy tale. In the books, Hester’s mother is revealed to be the Witch from the classic fairy tale Hansel And Gretel. In the movie, Hester’s primary role is as Sophie’s main adversary in The School For Evil, but Hester’s mother being the Witch from Hansel And Gretel adds a layer of depth to the character.

What Happened To The Candy Witch?
The fate of Hester’s mother, Gertrude, is perhaps unsurprisingly very similar to that of the Witch in the original Hansel And Gretel fairy tale in The School For Good And Evil book series. Gertrude spent many years luring and eating children as The Candy Witch. Unfortunately, when Hester was still a baby, Gertrude met her demise when Hansel and Gretel ate through the roof of her house, killing her mother. Later in The School For Good And Evil book series, Gertrude is brought back from the dead by the School Master (revealed to in fact be Rafal early in the Netflix The School For Good And Evil movie ending), and she is then killed for a second time by Hester, her own daughter.
What Hester Thinks About Her Mother
In The School For Good And Evil books, Hester has expressed a range of feelings regarding her villainous mother. Hester believes that her mother failed as a villain when she underestimated Hansel and Gretel, leading to The Candy Witch’s demise. What Hester perceives as her mother’s failure drives her desire to be better than her and do well in The School Of Evil. However, Hester does have a photo of her mother by her bed, which shows that she also cares for and ires her mother in The School For Good And Evil.
