Widely considered one of the best games of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will release a highly-anticipated sequel next year. The levels of excitement and discussion the series generates cement it as one of the best and most influential gaming franchises in history.
Thus, it's no surprise that fans express their love for the series in many ways, including through memes. Indeed, fans use Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, and many other social networks to share their memes about Link and company, finding new ways to honor the Zelda franchise while still poking fun at it.
Art Imitates... Life?
The so-called "woman yelling at cat" meme is a fixture on Twitter. It originates from a 2011 episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, where cast member Taylor Armstrong got into an argument while fellow housewife Kyle Richards looked on.
The Zelda equivalent comes from a scene in Skyward Sword, with Zelda taking the Armstrong role and Link acting as a Richards stand-in. The similarity between both images really is uncanny; Zelda might look slightly less emotional than Armstrong, but Link looks just as confused as Richards did in the original argument.
Crossover For The Ages
Seinfeld remains relevant today, thanks to streaming services that keep Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer's adventures alive and thriving.
Twitter @FranOpposum made a funny meme featuring the beloved sitcom and the best-known Zelda title, Ocarina of Time. The result was The Legend of Seinfeld: Ocarina of Nothing, poking fun at how the show was famously about nothing. It's an inspired idea, provoking a funny response from anyone who reads it.
Dad Humor At Its Best
Everyone, even casual fans, knows that Ganon is The Legend of Zelda's perpetual antagonist. He is the King of the Gerudo people, obsessed with ruling the Hyrule Empire and commonly seeking the Triforces of Courage and Wisdom to go with the one he possesses, Power. Logically, Ganon despises Link in most iterations, acting as the final boss for the young warrior to defeat.
Twitter @RukiaBrooks responded to another 's plea for funny memes by posting one about Ganon's inability to surf the internet because of the over-abundance of links. It's dad humor at its best and the sort of joke that would make Ganon seethe with rage.
Political Com Edition
The Political Com is a website that uses metrics to determine an individual's political inclinations, using a spectrum with two axes: economic, determined by a Left or Right metric, and social, determined by a Libertarian or Authoritarian metric.
Twitter @SinDeath_ uses the chart to determine the apparent politics of four Zelda characters: the Goron Elder, Tingle, Link, and Zelda herself. The idea of Link as a leftist Libertarian because he's a "tree-hugging hippy" is far too funny to process.
Boss Battles, Amirite?
The Legend of Zelda has some of the best boss battles in video games, most of which involve Ganon. The series often has Link face these threats alone, although he does receive ample help from numerous characters throughout the game and hopefully arrives in top form.
Some players strategize before the final boss, but others prefer to wing it. The appropriately named Twitter @ZeldaMemes posted this hilarious chart that perfectly captures some players' gaming experiences. Why prepare when they can run in circles and hope for the best? Every player has done it.
Link, Short King
The relationship between Zelda and Link is unclear at best. Some fans ship them, while others prefer to see them as having a sibling-like relationship. The games did little to clarify the duo's situation, at least until Skyward Sword confirmed their romance. Breath of the Wild expanded upon it, confirming Link and Zelda as one of the best couples in gaming history.
One of the best parts of their romance is their height difference. Twitter and artist @bessiebee3 made a cute yet still funny meme to describe their dynamic. Seeing Zelda carrying a notably blushed link is especially funny, considering he's the one that usually rescues her.
Justice For Toon Link
Most fans consider Breath of the Wild the best entry in the series, understandably so. The title was a game-changer in of graphics and open-world environments. However, one of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, remains painfully underrated. It features a distinctive art style that gives Link a more cartoonish appearance.
"Toon Link" became famous after becoming part of the ever-increasing roster of fighters in the Super Smash Bros. series. Many fans like Toon Link and believe he should get more attention; for example, Twitter @David_Payan2, who used a hilarious meme to explain his preference for Toon Link over the more distinguished version that appears in BotW.
Just Wishing, And Hoping, And Thinking, And Praying
Most Zelda games include the titular princess becoming captive or trapped somehow. Link must then go on a long, elaborate journey to rescue her, fighting enemies and making new friends along the way. Princess Zelda is far from a damsel in distress, but many games in the series cast her in the role.
Twitter @Kaissy62708309 uses the popular Narcos-related "waiting" meme to describe Zelda waiting while Link goes on his exciting journey. The princess takes the Pablo Escobar role in this new version of the meme, which hilariously captures the damsel in distress vibe.
Slay!
The Gerudo people have a very peculiar clothing style. Breath of the Wild's Urbosa, a tall and beautiful woman in a revealing outfit, is one of the most well-known Gerudo characters from the franchise other than Ganondorf.
Twitter and artist @ArtkLeroy did this incredible meme, including Link and Zelda in the classic "Yas slay bitch" template, and it makes perfect sense. After all, if Link is going to the Gerudo Valley, he should at least look the part. Zelda's ecstatic expression at his makeover is too good for words.
More Dad Humor!
Toon Link is the perfect protagonist for particularly silly memes. His design is already somewhat goofy, so using him makes perfect sense.
Creators and influencers use the common phrase "link in bio" when talking about or promoting something. However, Twitter @HynesGaming takes the meaning literally and creates a meme that shows Toon Link in Biology class, AKA a "link in Bio." It's a completely silly and ridiculous meme that still manages to bring out a smile from even the most serious of fans.
