Sony’s PlayStation 5 reveal event announced Hitman 2 was confirmed in 2018 before E3, releasing later the same year in November as the sequel to 2016’s Hitman.
The franchise’s developer, IO Interactive, separated from Square Enix in 2017 after the latter pulled funding from the Hitman and whispers regarding Kane & Lynch 3, though, little has surface so far.
The PlayStation 5 event officially unveiled Hitman 3 via a cinematic trailer on YouTube, with the game set to release in January 2021. Showcasing some black-and-white cinematography that transitions to full color and some ominous narration, the trailer hints at returning gameplay tropes amidst new characters and locations. From a dark forest and stormy weather to a nightclub and regal mansion, Agent 47 appears to be back in his element.
Updates regarding the title’s gameplay innovations or story developments have not been revealed, but more is likely to surface in the coming months. Assuming there are no delays, Hitman 3 has only seven months before players can get their hands on it as one of the earliest PlayStation 5 releases. If the final line in the trailer is any indication, however, gamers may be in for a challenge when the game debuts on the PlayStation 5, as “Only death awaits.” Of course, based on previous games, that mantra is likely referring to Agent 47’s targets.
The Hitman franchise is one of the longest-running annihilate targets in a variety of ways, either through a direct approach or more calculated means. Since IO’s decision to make the latest installments episodic, each entry has had a longer shelf life, keeping players coming back over time as new expansions are released.
Hitman 3 has a release window of January 2021.
