The 1993 fantasy comedy plans for a third Hocus Pocus movie.

It's the first film in the franchise that most fans hold so close to their hearts, however. Whether it's the committed performances from acting veterans like Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy; or it's the cozy feeling of Salem in the fall, Hocus Pocus is a movie that's just easy to watch. One way the filmmakers captured that cozy New England feeling was by filming on location in Salem. Much of Hocus Pocus is filmed around the real town, and it's very easy to go and see the real places that ended up in the movie.

10 Thackery Binx's House

Pioneer Village, Salem, MA

Thackery Binx (Sean Murray) walking out of his log cabin in 1693 Salem in Hocus Pocus.

Thackery Binx's (Sean Murray) house is a memorable location in Hocus Pocus and the home is shown at the opening of the film when Binx strides out of it early in the morning. An old wooden home, it looks just like the time of domicile that would be expected to be found in 17th century New England. The red and gold leaves scattered around only add to that feeling.

9 Jacob Bailey High School Exterior Shots

Philips Elementary School, Salem, MA

The exterior of Jacob Bailey High School in Hocus Pocus.

Jacob Bailey High School is one of the key locations of Hocus Pocus, considering all the teen characters go to school there. While most interior shots were filmed on soundstages in Burbank, California (via DenOfGeek), the exterior of the Jacob Bailey High School was filmed in Salem as well. Philips Elementary School serves as the stand-in for the school. Philips Elementary is located in Washington Square (via AdventuresInLindseyLand).

It's an imposing-looking building and just the sort of boarding school-like building a kid from Los Angeles, like Max (Omri Katz) would be nervous to attend.

The school ended its run as a functioning place of education in 1992, making it the perfect location to film Hocus Pocus (via Salem). The building is not currently open to the public, but the exterior of Philips Elementary is easily visible from the main part of town. It's an imposing-looking building and just the sort of boarding school-like building a kid from Los Angeles, like Max (Omri Katz) would be nervous to attend.

8 Allison's House

Ropes Mansion, Salem, MA

The outside of Allison's House in Hocus Pocus

Allison Watts' (Vinessa Shaw) house is a large, white mansion that Max and Dani (Thora Birch) visit on Halloween night. It has columns, a big fence, and dozens of glowing orange pumpkins in the yard. There are even stacks of hay thrown around indicating the Watts have quite a bit of money. The actual house used for filming those exterior shots sits on 318 Essex Street in Salem, MA.

The house is commonly known as the Ropes Mansion, and it is run by Salem's Peabody Essex Museum. The home was built in the late 1720s and is one of the few houses in the McIntire Historic District that the public can access. It's named for Judge Nathaniel Ropes, who once lived in the house, as did three generations of his family. The space can be toured and even rented out for small events such as weddings (via PEM).

7 Old Town Hall

Salem, MA

The outside of Old Town Hall in Hocus Pocus

Old Town Hall is the site of a large Halloween party all the adults attend in Hocus Pocus. It's the location of the famous scene where Winifred Sanderson (Midler) sings "I Put a Spell on You", which also serves as a curse to make everyone at the party dance until they die. The interior of the scene was shot in Burbank on soundstages, but the exterior was filmed in Salem, Massachusetts.

The real town hall stands on 32 Derby Square and was erected in 1816 and is the namesake of the Old Town Hall National Historic District where it resides (via SalemMA). Old Town Hall is open to the public and can be rented out by the community, but it is no longer used for municipal operations. It also hosts the Salem Museum and plays are occasionally performed inside.

6 Town Park

Salem Common, Salem, MA

Max (Omri Katz) riding up to Allison (Vinessa Shaw) in the Town Park in Hocus Pocus

Towards the beginning of Hocus Pocus, Max rides his bike up to Allison in a large common populated by other students going back and forth to their classes. It's the same moment that Allison gives a handwritten number back to him. That's a real location in town and is located across from Philips Elementary, just as it is oriented in the movie.

The location is known as Salem Common, and it's where many of the outdoor scenes in Hocus Pocus were filmed. Plenty of events now take place on Salem Common, including a food truck and craft beer festival, a "Salem Witches' Magic Circle" on Halloween, and Halloween movie watch parties (via HauntedHappenings). The spiked black metal fence from the movie is still there, running across the grass, and it looks basically unchanged from 1993.

5 Cemetery

Old Burial Hill, Marblehead, MA

Elijah (Steve Voboril) and Jay (Tobias Jelinek) talkig to Max (Omri Katz) at the cemetary in Hocus Pocus

The cemetery in Hocus Pocus is a major location as it's where the witches unleash the moth-filled Billy Butcherson to attack Max and his friends. It's a suitably creepy setting, likely because it is a real cemetery that goes by the name Old Burial Hill. One of the few exterior locations in Hocus Pocus not shot in Salem, Old Burial Hill is located in Marblehead, MA, which is only a short drive from Salem.

The cemetery was established at the site of Marblehead's first colonial meeting house, a public building that often served as a place of worship and public discourse.

The cemetery is a picturesque graveyard and gives a great view of Marblehead Harbor. Established in 1638, it is reportedly the burial site for around 600 Revolutionary War soldiers, though few of these graves are even marked (via OldBurialHill). Still, there are plenty of well-preserved headstones that make wandering around the cemetery a fascinating look back at the people and families who lived in the area.

4 1693 Salem Aerial Shots

17th-Century English Village, Plymouth, MA

Opening shot in Hocus Pocus of 1693 Salem from the air

The first scene in Hocus Pocus, before even Thackery Binx comes out of his house, is a flying aerial shot of a 17th-century village. It gives the effect of flying along on a broomstick, and though the Sanderson sisters have not been introduced yet, there's no doubt whose point of view the audience is watching from thanks to the witchy shadow on the water. That village the camera zooms over is not Salem, MA, surprisingly, and is actually Plymouth, MA, the site of the famous Plymouth Rock and over 50 miles south of Salem.

The Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth is another living history museum in Massachusetts. Visitors can take themselves on a self-guided tour through the colonial village experiencing what life was like back in the 17th century. The museum is populated by reenactors who will happily talk about their history as well as their day-to-day lives (via Plimoth).

3 1693 Salem

Pioneer Village, Salem, MA

Two boys running through 1693 Salem in Hocus Pocus.

As a Salem, Massachusetts movie, the town of Salem and the historical sites it offers are used multiple times throughout Hocus Pocus. Scenes from the beginning of the film were shot in the woods surrounding the Pioneer Village, the same village where Binx's cabin is located in real life. The village sits on three acres of land, affording the film crew plenty of opportunities to make it seem like the village museum is actually a thriving town.

Pioneer Village has many examples of colonial architecture, including dugouts and wigwams. There are also culinary and medicinal gardens as well as a blacksmith shop. The Pioneer Village is open from 12 pm to 4 pm with the last entry to the site at 3:45. The filmmakers took full advantage of the setting, using everything for Hocus Pocus.

2 Max And Dani Dennison's House

Ocean Avenue, Salem, MA

Max and Dani's house with a light coming out of it at night in Hocus Pocus.

Max and Dani Dennison's house is another major location in Hocus Pocus, viewed frequently from the outside. It's an incredibly memorable movie house with big windows, a white porch, and a large widow's walk at the top. When framed against a dark sky with a glowing full moon, it's the quintessential horror movie home.

The Dennison's house is located on Ocean Avenue in Salem, MA, and remains a private house in a residential area. The surrounding area is perfectly in line with the rest of Hocus Pocus and the view from the house down the hill offers some incredible views. Fans should take care not to get too close to it, considering it's privately owned. The residents may not be too appreciative of strangers constantly coming up to their walkway and looking through their windows.

1 The Lighthouse

Chandler Hovey Park, Marblehead, MA

Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) flying a broom and singing Come Little Children in Hocus Pocus.

During the sequence where Sarah Sanderson (Parker) flies through the air and sings "Come Little Children", she's shown flying over a lighthouse in Hocus Pocus' Salem. The location of that lighthouse is not in Salem and is instead located in Chandler Hovey Park in Marblehead, MA. The lighthouse is called Lighthouse Point.

Chandler Hovey Park encomes 3.74 acres. It overlooks the harbor and also gives views of Manchester-By-The-Seas and Beverly. There are pavilions, benches, picnic tables, and restrooms in the park as well. It was originally owned by the U.S. government, but it was sold to Marblehead resident, Chandler Hovey, in 1948. Hovey then donated it to the town. During Sarah's flight in Hocus Pocus, she also flies over Ocean Avenue, another notable location in the film, and the site of Max and Dani Dennison's home.
