With Hogwarts Legacy still riding on its widespread success, a potential DLC could very well be on the horizon - but the game would actually be better off without one. The action RPG, which lets players insert themselves into the same wizarding world from the Harry Potter books and movies, has been the best-selling game of 2023 so far; likely not many witches and wizards would object to the release of more exciting content, especially regarding Quidditch. However, given the nature of Hogwarts Legacy's launch and contents, the franchise would benefit from shifting gears entirely and moving onto Hogwarts Legacy 2.
That's not to say that a Quidditch DLC for Hogwarts Legacy wouldn't be a thrilling addition. The beloved wizarding sport has been sorely missing from the base game since launch, and for seemingly no good reason. After all, players can already explore the Quidditch pitch, and they can even find House-themed Quidditch gear in shops, chests, and even through some Field Guide challenges. Plus, Heaster Black's real reason for canceling Quidditch in Hogwarts Legacy is completely dishonest and unjust. As such, many students might understandably be vying for a proper Quidditch DLC - but in reality, such an expansion wouldn't make much sense.
It's Too Late For Hogwarts Legacy DLC
The biggest underlying issue with a potential Hogwarts Legacy DLC is that its release would simply be too late. Over five months have ed since the initial launch of the game for PC and next-gen consoles in February, and two months have ed since its launch on current-gen consoles in May. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy has yet to release whatsoever. Multiple delays have set it all the way back to November 14, 2023, indicating that Avalanche Software is still hard at work on the handheld port.
With the game still missing on an entire platform, it's not surprising that there has been a lack of news regarding Hogwarts Legacy DLC. The Nintendo Switch port is likely a priority for the developer, meaning that players probably won't see an expansion anytime soon - especially if there are intentions to make it available for the Switch. By the time a prospective DLC releases, Hogwarts Legacy could be over a year old, and many people will have already finished the game through and through. Even with the title's immense popularity, the prime window of opportunity for an expansion has already ed.
Hogwarts Legacy Quidditch DLC Would Be Pointless
Furthermore, as amazing as it would be to compete against NPCs or other players on the Quidditch pitch, a Hogwarts Legacy Quidditch DLC would be a counterproductive venture for the franchise. In April, Portkey Games announced Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, a separate game revolving around the magical sport itself. The title has been in development by Unbroken Studios for several years, and it will be a multiplayer experience; players will be able to test their mettle against other challengers, participate in solo adventures, and even customize their characters to their liking.
Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions doesn't have a release date just yet, but playtesting has already begun, which indicates that the game may be close to finished. In fact, those eager to hop on a broom and outplay their flying foes can sign up for the closed Quidditch Champions playtests, which have already offered some lucky players a sneak peek of the fast-paced, competitive game. Knowing that a separate title dedicated to the art of Quidditch is en route, it would make little sense for the franchise to release a Quidditch DLC for Hogwarts Legacy, potentially cannibalizing sales.
The sport would probably be better off staying away from the RPG anyway, given the glaring problems with brooms in Hogwarts Legacy. Although soaring through the sky above Hogwarts Castle and the rest of the Highlands is relaxing and often breathtaking, the experience is consistently tainted by the lackluster broom flight controls. Especially on console platforms, it can be awkward to even so much as look in the desired direction while flying a broom; participating in a sport as speedy and cutthroat as Quidditch would be nearly impossible.
Hogwarts Legacy Could Be A Trilogy
With Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions on the way - and with the base game still missing on the Nintendo Switch as a whole - it wouldn't make much sense for Avalanche Software to release a DLC, let alone one pertaining to Quidditch. On the other hand, a sequel would be a much more exciting and fruitful venture. Instead of tacking on a few hours of additional content, Hogwarts Legacy 2 could grant witches and wizards with a fresh storyline, a new cast of characters, another mystery to unravel, and even some additional closure for the game's somewhat vague endings.
Since Hogwarts Legacy sees the protagonist the ranks as a fifth-year student, the game could easily become the start of a trilogy, which covers their remaining two years at the school. In fact, a Hogwarts Legacy sequel could already be in production, as there's evidence to suggest that Avalanche Software is working on another game. While not confirmed to be Hogwarts Legacy-related by any means, it wouldn't be surprising to see the developer capitalize on the outstanding reception of the Harry Potter RPG with another installment.
Instead of dwelling on a belated and counterproductive Quidditch DLC, Hogwarts Legacy is better off moving onto a fully-fledged sequel. The game has the opportunity to kick off a one-of-a-kind trilogy, which could tell an increasingly dark and complex tale within the wizarding world. Until Avalanche Software shares some concrete news regarding the future of the franchise, witches and wizards can't know for certain where their magical journey will take them next - but with any luck, it'll be a Hogwarts Legacy sequel, and not a DLC.
