Hogwarts Legacy's PS5 trailer shows fantastic beasts filling the titular school of witchcraft and wizardry. No major hints have shown who the dark force responsible for bringing these creatures to the school might be, but it’s likely to be a wizard not yet given the spotlight in the Harry Potter book and film series before.
Hogwarts Legacy is set in the late 19th century, before Voldemort and his followers were ever born. This means that the game will likely have little to do with the story of Harry Potter or the rise of Tom Riddle. There is some Harry Potter material that has fleshed out the history of the series prior to the 20th century, but for the most part, Hogwarts Legacy will explore an untapped period of Wizarding World history.
Considering when Hogwarts Legacy will take place and its departure from the main story of the Harry Potter series, the game’s villain may be Loxias. Referenced in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Loxias was the possessor of the Elder Wand near the end of the 19th century. With the power that comes with such an item - and the power-hunger to drive a wizard or witch to attain it - Loxias would make a suiting villain for Hogwarts Legacy.
The Elder Wand Could Make Loxias Hogwarts Legacy's Villain
In Harry Potter lore, the Elder Wand is one of three Deathly Hallows granted to the Peverell brothers. These three brothers were given these items by Death itself because they were able to use their magical strengths to construct a bridge over a river that famously killed all who dared to cross it. The oldest brother asked for Death to make a wand more powerful than any other, which resulted in the creation of the Elder Wand.
In Harry Potter and Hogwarts Legacy canon, the Elder Wand has allowed those who bore it to do many great things, but it also brought unwanted attention from others who desired the powers it granted. This has led to a long tradition of wizards murdering each other to become the master of the Elder Wand, a tradition that Loxias became a part of when he killed Barnaby Deverill. Loxias was a particularly evil owner of the weapon, as he named the Elder Wand the "Deathstick" after his murderous intentions with the item. Considering his evil ways and that he killed the Elder Wand bearer of the first half of the 19th century, there's a chance that Loxias is going to be the villain of Hogwarts Legacy.
However, the game could still incorporate main series figures into its story. Hogwarts Legacy could use Albus Dumbledore and Grindelwald because the two attended Hogwarts and Durmstrang at the tail end of the 19th century, so Grindelwald may have a villainous role in the game. Hogwarts Legacy is set to release in 2022 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
