As promised earlier this week, PlayStation hosted a releasing Hogwarts Legacy in 2021, then delayed the action role-playing game by more than a year to ensure the development team received the time necessary to see its ambitions through to completion. Notably, WB and developer Avalanche Software kept much about the Wizarding World experience under lock and key before today's State of Play stream.

Unlike like most of the franchise's previous interactive adventures, Hogwarts Legacy does not serve as a film tie-in. In fact, it hardly connects to the well-known book and movie mythos at all. The crew at Avalanche Software dispensed with Harry Potter as the focal narrative thread and instead crafted a story set in the latter part of the 19th Century. Players won't assume the rule of a preset hero either, thanks to a character creation system in Hogwarts Legacy that should provide myriad customization options for both witches and wizards.

During today's Hogwarts Legacy-dedicated Hogwarts Legacy's gameplay reveal also showcased an in-depth look at wand-based combat mechanics, open-world exploration, and day-to-day activities like attending classes. Check it all out in the video linked below:

Of course, there's still plenty that WB Games and Co. continue to keep under wraps. Those looking forward to the all-new fantastical adventure will want to take a closer look at customization options, for example. Plus, several story and character-related details will likely be left for players to discover on their own.

WB Games announced Hogwarts Legacy nearly two years ago during a PS5 digital event in September 2020. As mentioned above, the role-playing title initially bore a 2021 launch window, but a lengthy delay pushed it into a new year. Despite rumors that claimed the adventure wouldn't be ready until next year, it's clear Hogwarts Legacy's 2022 launch window remains on track.
