The Room of Requirement was one of the most memorable locations in the main Harry Potter series, and it's no less important in Hogwarts Legacy. The long-awaited RPG allows players to become a part of the wizarding world, throwing them head-first into a Hogwarts full of unique characters and quests - and even the most well-kept secrets of the castle, like the Room of Requirement, aren't off limits.
Across Hogwarts Legacy, there are fantastic beasts and creatures to find, the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade to explore, and plenty of Easter eggs and hidden details across the castle and game. But the Room of Requirement specifically serves as a player base outside their common room, where they can brew potions, craft items, use specific spells and even decorate to their tastes. The Room itself has a long history within Hogwarts from how it works to how long ago it was first discovered.
How Hogwarts Legacy's Room Of Requirement Works
In Harry Potter, the Room of Requirement (sometimes referred to as the Come and Go Room), is a room that only appears to witches and wizards who are in dire need of it and is a life-changing discovery for a small, lucky number of students attending Hogwarts. Located in the seventh-floor corridor of the castle, particularly desperate students or staff can find the entrance to a chamber that suits their current needs. It isn't restricted by most physical limitations, and some even believe it's partly sentient, as it can range anywhere from a small broom closet to a giant meeting room, depending on what one specifically requires.
The Room of Requirement is highly secretive, as those who enter it will be completely concealed from ersby and even from the Marauders' Map, however, it is possible for students to enter another's personal room. It won't necessarily stay stagnant, either; if a witch or wizard's greatest need changes, the room will fluctuate accordingly. Although it's highly powerful - and it can be used for good or evil - the Room of Requirement does have its limitations. It's thought to use a complex form of Transfiguration magic, and so it must abide by Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration. This means, for example, it can't spawn any food of real sustenance.
Who First Discovered Hogwarts Legacy's Room Of Requirement
When Hogwarts was founded, it's likely the Room of Requirement too appeared. While it's unclear who first discovered it, Dumbledore was certainly one of the only wizards to recognize what he had found. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Dumbledore tells the Heaster of Durmstrang Institute that he once found a room full of toilets when he needed to use the bathroom, but he wasn't able to find it again. The Fantastic Beasts series later confirmed that Dumbledore was using the space to store important objects such as the Mirror of Erised as early as 1927.
However, considering Hogwarts Legacy takes place in the 1890s, Dumbledore won't have come across the Room of Requirement just yet. This either means that another witch or wizard was able to locate it beforehand, relaying the information to the game's protagonist, or that players themselves are the first to discover it.
How Hogwarts Legacy's Room Of Requirement Was Used In Harry Potter
The Room of Requirement is an iconic Harry Potter location in Hogwarts Legacy, and it has a long, complicated history with the main series' eponymous character and ing cast. After Harry discovered the space during his fifth year at Hogwarts, he used it to his advantage in numerous ways. For example, during the same year, it was used as a meeting place for Dumbledore's Army, where Harry and the rest of the organization would practice essential self-defense spells. During the series' last installment and the Second Wizarding War, it became a hideout for dozens of students, hoping to escape the wrath of Heaster Snape's disciplinarian rules and staff.
Dark wizards also got ahold of the Room of Requirement from time to time, using it to further their evil ambitions. For example, Draco Malfoy used the Room of Requirement to hide a Vanishing Cabinet, eventually allowing him to transport dark wizards in Harry Potter onto the castle grounds. Voldemort himself even used it to hide one of his seven Horcruxes, not bothering to use any protective charms as he believed he was the only one aware of the room's existence. This ultimately backfired when Harry tracked down its location and quickly destroyed it in Hogwarts' final hour.
How The Room Of Requirement Will Be Used In Hogwarts Legacy
Although the Room of Requirement has had some serious implications in the lore of Harry Potter, it will be just as meaningful to players in Hogwarts Legacy. Perhaps most exciting, though, are the multiple Vivariums that players will have access to in Hogwarts Legacy's Room of Requirement. Therein, they'll be able to enter entirely new environments, such as an open, grassy field where they can tame and care for magical creatures. The Vivariums will likely also be useful for gathering resources that aren't native to Hogwarts' location.
Hogwarts Legacy's characters already beat the books', and the game seems to contain no shortage of fast-paced wizarding action - so when players want to take a break and bunker down for their next adventure, they'll surely welcome the sight of the Room of Requirement.
